Title: Guide to Installing OTA 4.2.2 With Root and Without Root
Post by: S.Prime on February 13, 2013, 06:14:58 PM
OTA 4.2.2 Install Guide - Read the Entire Guide Before Starting

If you have waited until the OTA was pushed to your Nexus 7, you have a notification in the notification bar at the top left of your screen or you can go to "Settings" - "About" - "Check for Updates" and you will see the "Notification Screen" shown below and with or without root you are ready to begin the upgrade process.

OTA Notification Screen for 4.2.2

Install 4.2.2 Without Root:

Step 1:  Simply tap "Restart & Install" in the Notification Screen illustrated above and your Nexus will restart and you can watch the upgrade process finalizing with "Optimizing Apps __ of __" - "Starting Apps" - "Finishing Boot"

Note, on finishing boot, you will retain all of your apps and data.

Install 4.2.2 With Root

Procedure when using CWM Recovery Touch 6.0.1.9

Step 1:  Tap "Restart & Install" in the Notification Screen illustrated above to restart your Nexus 7 and start the install process.

Step 2:  After your Nexus restarts in Recovery,Tap "Yes - Install Untrusted Zip" and wait for the upgrade process to finish.

Step 3:  Confirm "Reboot System Now"

Step 4:  The Nexus will reboot into recovery with "CWM Touch 6.0.1.9" and you will need to tap "Yes - Disable Flash Recovery" followed by "Yes - Fix Root (/system/xbin/su)

Step 5:  The Nexus will restart followed by "Optimizing Apps __ of __" then "Starting Apps" and "Finishing Boot" with all apps and data retained.

Procedure when using TWRP Recovery

Note TWRP will not retain root for you, therefore preserve root with Voodoo RootKeeper (https://play.google.com/store/search?q=voodoo+ota) Also if you are asked if you want to install "Stock Recovery" and you select "Yes" then TWRP will be replaced with the stock Android recovery and you will have to install TWRP again.

Step 1  Download the update file in Zip format from the link below to your Nexus 7 and it will be stored in \sdcard\downloads.

Nexus 7 WiFi 4.2.2 update (http://android.clients.google.com/packages/ota/google_nakasi/6ece895ecb23.signed-nakasi-JDQ39-from-JOP40D.6ece895e.zip)

Step 2  Go to "Recovery Mode" by using RomManager (https://play.google.com/store/search?q=rom+manager) or GooManager (https://play.google.com/store/search?q=goo+manager) from Google Play or by shutting down the Nexus 7 and then pressing on the center of the volume control rocker and then the power button until you see the Bootloader screen. Then press volume down until you see "Recovery Mode" and then press the power button to select and you will enter TWRP.

Step 3  Tap "Install" in TWRP and navigate to the update zip that you downloaded and stored in \sdcard\downloads and select it to install. Note that "Up A Level" goes back in the file structure.

Step 4:  The Nexus will restart followed by "Optimizing Apps __ of __" then "Starting Apps" and "Finishing Boot" with all apps and data retained.

Step 5:  After the Nexus 7 restarts open RootKeeper and restore root.

Verification: Go to "Settings" - "About" and you can verify 4.2.2 as the following illustration shows:

Notes:

One:  If you are rooted "Make a Nandroid Backup before you start the upgrade"

Two: Make sure you have install VooDoo OTA Root Keeper (https://play.google.com/store/search?q=voodoo+ota) and preserved root.

Three: Note that if you are using "TWRP" or the "Non-Touch version of CWM" your prompts will differ from this guide and you will need to use "OTA RootKeeper" or "SuperUser SU" settings to preserve root.

Four: If you have removed stock apps, modified build_prop, side loaded apps, or made other system modifications, your update may fail.

This guide will evolve as feedback is provided, so ask for help, if you encounter problems and feel free to offer suggestions to improve the guide.

My N7 is unlocked and rooted
I got the notification to update and click to install update
It boots up and go to TWRP and ask for a zip file which I can not find.
I reboot and no longer can do the update because it says that mine is up to date BUT it still 4.2.1
I clear the Google Frame work data and still no notifications of update.
===========
SPrime can you please elaborate on the following :
Install 4.2.2 With Root

I download CWM but it is an img, how do I install it so I can follow your guide AFTER I get the update notifications

THANKS

This is the link to download the WiFi only version of the zipped update file. Tapping on the link from your Nexus 7 will start the download and you will note the downward pointing arrow in the left portion of the notification screen. Once the download completes it will be located in /sdcsrd/download. Start TWRP and select install zip and browse to the downloaded file and select it. I will try and make a guide later today for the manual update, unless someone else can do it sooner. Also I will make a tutorial on replacing your current recovery with CWM Touch.

What do you need radio?

All I did was download the zip file, rebooted into TWRP (I use Quick Boot to reboot into recovery). Selected install and selected the zip file to install, and swiped the switch to install.

Then, once it booted back up, I restored root in Voodoo Root Keeper and ran SuperSU which reinstalled itself.

From off hold the power button and volume down. A menu should appear that will lead you to recovery.

Well, I have the notice that the file is downloaded.  But when I am in the recovery, I don't see any zip file.  Is the OTA update a zip file?

Did you dowmnload the file or was it pushed to yuou Over The Air?
The ota update should have been been installed when it arrived. The zip file is only for people that downloaded it to get a head start so to speak. Have you tried to reboot Radio to get the ota again  and install immediately?

Oh sure, I've rebooted since the OTA arrived but I don't want to "touch to install" because I'm rooted and I know it won't go through...

Had to flash the stock ROM and then root/cwm, install tapatalk, d/l the update, reboot into recovery, install the update, reboot, install stickmount & Titanium, recover apps and data from backup.

Worked well apart from losing my kindle books, not putting widgets back on the screen and having to type all my account details in again for Skype, mail, YouTube, Facebook, etc.

Then I disabled a few apps and restarted and got stuck at the animated X.

So rinse and repeat, without the disabling apps and it looks good so far.

I am going to have to do pretty much the same Nordie. My unit has been screaming for a reset anyway. I just haven't setup my computer with the toolkit since moving so I am kind of stuck at the moment.

Has anyone tried the adb sideload method? I've yet to receive the ota either in notifications or system update. Trying to avoid unlock, root, custom recovery, etc.

Matt, have you tried forcing the update?

I've successfully forced it on my Nexus 4 12hrs after release.

Settings> Apps> All> Google Service Framework> Clear data> Force stop....

Settings> About tablet> System updates> Check now...

You have to be quick, before it finds your location and if it doesn't work the first time try again.

Thanks, jay. I was clearing the cache only. Got the wugfresh, downloading new adb stuff when I got the notification. So I'm good. Yippee. Too bad the system update won't point to a local file.

The nexus 4 has 2 different builds depending on whether purchased from google play or a store. The play versions update sooner, was wondering if something similar for the nexus 7 as I'm always late to the party. Maybe not a build, but some identifier elsewhere.

The adb sideload method looks simple enough, if you rename the zip to something easier to type... I'll try it next time. Klp?

Just saw this thread. Using the twrp recovery, do I need to unfreeze my frozen apps before proceeding with flashing the zip?

sorry for the confusion, i am using CWM Recovery to be exact. Just thought of trying the TWRP route but finally decided not to, and just use the CWM instead. I also tried installing the zip file manually thru CWM recovery but still encountering the same error.

Just verifying, that you have a WiFi only Nexus 7.  The update.zip is WiFi only.  If you are wifi only delete the update file and download it again and try installing in CWM.

The error message states the patch is failing because your facelock is corrupted in some way.  Did you remove it? Or frozen in titanium? Unfreeze it.

thanks, facelock and other apps were indeed frozen after checking them manually on the system/app folder. They were resolved by correcting their filename. Unfortunately again, another error  came up :(

apply_patch_check("/system/framework/core.odex"

Im now thinking if should i do a factory reset or not. Am i going to lose the root privilege on factory reset?

Yes you will lose root, but it is easy enough to root again. Remember to save any files or data to external storage before a factory reset.
