I have a rooted nexus 7 which I can connect to a stick drive using an otg usb cable. Stickmount mounted it everything is cool.
Question: do I need to unmount it before disconnecting things, like you do in the windows world, to avoid damaging the stick?

Linux is worse than Windows, for requiring peripherals to be properly mounted and unmounted. I always unmount flash memory from Android devices, or turn off the devices, before removing the memory.

I agree, unmounting is safest.
To unmount, simply open your notifications and drag your finger down on the Stickmount notification to expand the notification and reveal the "Unmount" option.

Unmount should be used for the same reason eject should be used on your Windows machine. That way you can be sure that you are not pulling your flash drive out before all files have finished writing to the drive.
