What exactly does rooting do, and what are the advantages of it?

For a start, look at the introduction in our rooting guide Here (http://nexus7forum.com/index.php?topic=367.msg2092#msg2092) and it will give you a brief description of the advantages of rooting, but at the moment the advantage of connecting external storage by an OTG cable is probably the major attraction.

Rooting gives you the user access to system files, this means you can modify them. You can run root only apps like Titanium Backup, Root Explorer & AdFree.
Rooting also allows you to install a custom recovery like CWM or TWRP with which you can flash custom kernels like the new over clock kernel which will over clock the CPU to I think 1.6GHz and you can flash custom ROM's like Cyanogen Mod 10.

Rooting gives you Administrator rights to you machine. As previously stated, logging on as an administrator is the only way to remove programs installed that you don't use. I've rooted all of my pocket pcs (phones) within hours of activation. I still haven't decided whether I need to root my N7 or not. I've found most of the software useful. For me it's just as easy to use WI-Fi as it is to mess with a USB flash drive.

What I would like to know is how do you download that NexusRootToolkit.v1.5.2.sfx.exe ? I even gave a PayPal donation and I can't seem to download the file. All I get is a stupid 'downloader' and a bunch of ad ware or something. I guess it's getting late here, I'll try again in the morning...
