Title: Pressing power on takes forever
Post by: grey on September 27, 2012, 08:26:41 PM
Today I received my new nexus 7. I played with it for awhile and then turn it off to compare start up times with Galaxy Tab 2. I pressed power button and nothing happened. I tried different combinations and basically it will power on after 45 seconds holding power button or if it plugged in to charge. Battery is at 70%. I called Google tech support and the guy made it sound like it is a "feature" of the device. He was like if the device stays plugged in for too long, has low battery, or was turned off manually the device will take 30 seconds to power on. That just doesn't sound right.
I haven't really found any good tips apart sending it back.
PS: I haven't had any issues with Samsung Galaxy tab 2 for a month of owning it.

On that note, why turn it off? The only time I ever turn mine off is to do a soft reset. I would be curious to hear if other users turn their tablet off. My other tablets are over a year old and I have never turned them off either. I have honestly never even considered shutting them down because I never shut down my phone and they are all Android.

I turn mind off regularly when I'm not using it, I have my S2 so if I just want to read my emails or use Tapatalk to come on here (and other forums) I use that...can't see the point wasting power when not in use and when I want to use it it's low on power...
Don't have any problems turning it on though, takes around a second to see the Google splash screen from pressing the power button and then about 25 seconds until the homescreen loads.
I think the customer service agent you spoke to is talking ballony...

I called Google one more time and yet the other guy was BSing me "well it will do that, if the device completely powered off", but suggested to contact ASUS at last, what I did. By ASUS' suggestion I did factory reset (which didn't change things), so they say next step is RMA. I am not sure what to do though RMA to the store or ASUS.
You guys might check power cycle on your device.
Google has to learn their stuff even quick start manual states that it takes 4 sec to press the power button

I just timed mine after shutting it down. It took 30 seconds from pressing the power button to home screen.

that is fine, I have to physically hold power button for 30-45 sec (in the best case scenario) just to get google logo
Just done more testing. It might be the power button itself, something getting loose (mechanism or bad contact) because if I hold the button and then move the tablet around it will begin the start up process, but I will send it for exchange anyways. Too bad B&H closes for more than 10 days.

I power down every two week when I'm doing my computer maintenance stuff.

I'm with JayJ.

I power off my N7 overnight but leave my S3 on in case of calls and to allow gmails to download (silently).

N7 is on the rest of the day though.

so is 30-45 seconds deal abnormal behavior?

If it's taking 30-45 seconds just to reach the Google splash screen then no that's not right... You could try a Factory data reset,  it'll wipe your N7 but it's usually the first thing to try...

I agree with Jay J, it may be time for a reset

ok, I did the reset several times but nothing changed. It's funny though that 2 Google dudes were trying to make it sound like it is normal.

Same thing happens to mine too. It shouldn't happen. What other piece of technology in today's world does the same..... Nothing.... So why Nexus 7. I reckon it's a fault and I'm tempted to take mine back for a refund after a week of owning it. It concerns me that it's happening and it makes me wonder if I bought a lemon and what other problems lie ahead in the future. Is it a switch problem? Is it a factory fault? Is it normal? I I think not.... It's intermittent with mine and after owning it for 8 days and turning it off every night, it's had a delayed power up 5 times already. The other times the Google wording came up within a few seconds.

Google and Asus, you have another problem to solve.
