Title: What Hobbies do you have?
Post by: JayJ on September 29, 2012, 02:41:17 AM
I have hobbies outside of the Android world despite being a mod here and on other forums and Android taking a fair bit of my time.
I love Anime and Manga, would love to have more but it's money and time spent watching/reading, I'm also a comic reader and have recently spent too much on comiXology which is nice because I can incorperate it into my love of Android using the comiXology app.
My other main hobby outside of the world of and is RC, I have several RC trucks from my Losi LST2 to my Losi Mini 8ight so thought I'd share some picture with my Nexus 7 friends...

Losi Mini 8ight

I've always been an avid skiier for more than 20 years thus skiing most slopes her on the East Coast and have been out West several times as well. I've just started introducing skiing to my wife and 2 young boys and they've enjoyed it immensely :)

A new hobby of mine that has been of very intriguing interest to both the Mrs and I has been photography. We purchased a fairly expensive camera to capture the special moments that we knew our young boys would provide but she and I have also surprisingly have found that photography has given us a new interest that we were not expecting ;)

I'm into computers and computer technology; which is good, since that's what my career is in.  I love Linux, but I've found myself working with Microsoft products mostly (I live in a Microsoft town, so it's really hard to find a Linux job).  I'm working on certifications with Microsoft to support my "hobby".

I manage an Exchange and Active Directory environment, as well as a Citrix farm, and I've spent the better part of this and last month learning Lync to implement it in our environment.  It is going to be replacing all of our phones, and I got it to make its first test calls yesterday!  Yes, I'm excited.

Anyway, I love my job and that it is my hobby.

I just to be way more competitive about it with the online play but since I have a family now I haven't been able to put the time in. If anyone wants some advice or some recommendations about games hit me up

I play guitar and sing some. I also love professional sports. I am proud of my Philadelphia Teams. Good or bad. I am a professional chef so cooking isn't a hobby but I enjoy it.

I used to be an avid bowler until older age and medical problems caught up with me.  I'm now an active member of my local computer club.  I'm a voracious reader.  I play with my model railroad.  I spend lots of time watching the grandsons sporting events.  I also spend a lot of time on internet forums.

As my screen name says, birdwatching, astronomy, and hypermiling.  But if it's expensive, I've probably tried it - hunting, photography, backpacking, canoeing, kayaking, motorcycling.  I've been to all the world's oceans and continents, except the Great Southern Ocean and Antarctica.

Well JJ, I've got several pics of my hobbies I'd like to share but for some reason I can't figure out how to post them here.  How did you post those rather large (and cool) pics??

I've got Photobucket JayJ, well the free one anyway, but I tried the "forum" link and then copied it to here using the 'insert image' and it didn't work.   I'll keep fiddling with this when I have time and see if I can make it work.

Did you sign up online for Photobucket?

Hit the Photobucket site up, upload pics and select the IMG link for forums. Just paste into the forums text input box, no need to use insert image code.

Let me know if you need any more help radio.

I'm into RC trucks, hunting, and fishing.  Since I'm an engineer by day, besides the Android addiction, I try and stay away from technology.  Here's a photo of my most recent addition, the Traxxas Slash 4x4.  The only thing still stock is the frame.

Sorry, here's the pic.

Is that a Traxxas Slash aboriji? Looks nice mate, can see RPM front & rear bumpers so any other upgrades? Also see STRC decals...

Yeah, it has a Mamba Monster motor and speed control, RPM control arms, STRC aluminum body mounts, a Traxxas fluid drive differential, Traxxas tie rods, JC tires and two piece rims, 56 tooth gear, and Integy remote reservoir shocks.  Sorry, I went a little crazy on it.  I also have a Losi Micro T.

Mate that actually not that bad, lol. You should see the upgrade lists for my RC's and the ones I've sold.

I have an Losi LST2, Losi XXXL Muggified E-LST (project build), Hot Bodies D8Te, Mugen Seiki MBX-6Te and a Losi Mini 8ight. XXXL and D8Te have both been built from scratch and upgraded as built, both have cost about £800+ each...

Nice, I'm working on complete custom Axial Wraith, starting with a custom aluminum chassis, and built ground up.  I'm still toying with the electronics now.  In fact, you'll notice in the below pic, my slash has the factory brushless motor in it.  That's because I'm test fitting the Mamba into the Wraith.

Wouldn't you want something waterproof in a Wraith?
I had a Wraith when they first came out albeit an RTR Wraith, couldn't get on with it personally. I found trailing to slow for me personally and the Wraith just isn't suited to speed because of the high CoG.
I did have plans to put a waterproof Holmes Hobbies TorqueMaster BR-XL with a TorqueMaster Pro 540 brushed motor but decided to sell the Wraith instead, also planned on going with lots of Vanquish Products upgrades too...

The thought I had for the Wraith is simply rock crawling.  There are a lot of locations where I can climb the rocks, in a dry environment.  Another plan I had was to keep the truck completely naked, in that, no body parts, just the solid aluminum chassis, and some skid plates.  With the amount I will have the Mamba geared down, it'll stay sloww, but it should do the same speed pulling a house.  Remember the Clod Buster, same basic idea.

Vanquish makes good stuff, but there is a small local machine shop that custom makes parts for the Axial line, in general, and they are tons cheaper that the after market stuff.  It is still little more than at the bar napkin stage, so we'll see where it takes me.  Who knows, I may end up with a plane.

I don't think the Wraith is very suited to crawling, it's CoG is just too high. It's also too tall for crawling, you"ll spend more time standing it back on it's wheels than crawling anywhere...

It's a very strange vehicle because it's not sure what it wants to be, is it a t trailer, is it a crawler or a basher....

The thought is to put 1/8th scale axles and tires, mess with the suspension to give more upward travel, and some more articulation.  As you know, these things always turn to some amalgam of what I'm visioning.
