Title: Low brightness on book pages

Whilst getting to know my Nexus 7, I must have used an unusual touch combination, because my book displays now have very low brightness. The brightness control is set to maximum and I have tried auto-brightness, but neither affects the low brightness of the books display.
Any help would be appreciated.

Have you powered down & back on?  If that doesn't work, I'd try a factory reset.
