Title: My Wi-Fi won't turn on...
Post by: JayJ on October 10, 2012, 03:46:03 PM
So I've been running CM10 for the past five of days and like it very much, heard about the 4.1.2 update yesterday so restored my stock backup but no update was available so restored my CM10 backup.
Today I decided whilst at work to restore my stock ROM and try again and if not update was available I'd update manually with the zip.
Once I restored my stock ROM I couldn't turn Wi-Fi on? The Wi-Fi  settings says "Turning Wi-Fi on" but does nothing else. It was okay last night so I tried wiping the cache and dalvik cache, still nothing so I wiped again and fixed permissions, nothing, still the same. So I did a complete wipe of my N7 and tried restoring the the stock backup, still the same so I did a factory reset and guess what....

It's worse than ever now because upon start up you have to connect to Wi-Fi before entering your account details and it still won't turn Wi-Fi on and now I can't enter recovery to see if CM10 is okay??

Arrggghhhh....

I suppose tomorrow I can flash the factory image but I'm at work for another eight hours with no Nexus 7....

...pass me the tissues...

...I'm off for a little cry...

It happens to the best of us  :'(  Good luck, but at least you have the option to call Google and request an RMA, explaining that it fails to recognize the WiFi. If they cannot access the device, they won't be able to determine that was rooted, without extensive testing, you may get it replaced.

Yeah I could try returning it but I can't believe there's no easy fix for this, I've spent the last three days Google searching and everything fails back to no drivers and the fact I can't enable USB debugging.
I did read that you could bypass the start up Wi-Fi selection screen by pressing the for corners from the to left in a clockwise direction but tried this lots and it doesn't work...

Haven't had my N7 for nearly three days...

It seems to hinge on getting past wi-fi selection. Maybe Google support has a workaround.?

I do remember reading that you can bypass the recovery bug and enter recovery by a series of power and volume key presses by simply having the Nexus 7 connected by usb to a computer and I don't remember it saying that debugging had to be enabled. Anyway I will see if I can find it again.

There is a bug in the boot loader. You have to be plugged into a PC in order to boot into recovery from the bootloader.

You can navigate anywhere with the UBS connected, pressing the volume key does nothing...

Dang,  Jay. You may be the first to successfully brick an N7? ;)

That's the annoying thing though mate, technically it's not bricked because it boots...

There once was a fellow named Jay,
Who played with his Nexus one day.
He said, "I feel sick!
But at least I didn't brick."
No matter what that Bird did say.

Try this update for the binaries.  It is a flashable zip of the drivers, including the Wi-Fi radio.

Honestly I'm not 100% sure, I installed and uninstalled the drivers several times and updated then manually in device manager in my W7 laptop but tried to boot to recovery via NRT but it kept telling me I couldn't with the correct drivers?
I uninstalled the drivers again, reinstalled and updated them again and tried to flash the factory image via NRT, the pop up saying rebooting to bootloader appeared but it didn't reboot. Then I get a pop up saying something about not being able to flash the factory image without being in the bootloader so I rebooted into bootloader manually and pressed okay...to my surprise NRT flashed the stock factory image...

I was surprised but thrilled at the same time...

Updated to 4.1.2, rooted with NRT and resorted my backed up internal memory. Just need to restore one of my back ups now...

:D

FFS!!!

It's happened again...

I've just tried restoring my nandroid of CM10 and the Wi-Fi has broken again...

Why???

I'm ditching TWRP and going to try CWM again, once I've flashed the factory image tonight after work.

EDIT- Restored the nandroid of stock/rooted 4.1.2 and Wi-Fi is working again??
Now restoring CM10 again...

EDIT2- Wi-Fi Is broken again, restoring 4.1.2...

I am so confuzzled it's unreal...

The backup I restored last week when the Wi-Fi broken I used the night I fixed my Nexus 7 and it flashed fine, this was my ROM before running CM10 for 5 days.
Today though it breaks the Wi-Fi as does my CM10 backup but the backup I made the night I fixed my Nexus 7 (4.1.2 stock, rooted, no apps) restored fine and fixed the Wi-Fi. And the backup I made today if my stock ROM also breaks the Wi-Fi...

This makes no sense....my head hurts...

JayJ do you think it is. TWRP or another issue?
Title: Re: My Wi-Fi won't turn on...

Could it be a hardware problem? I guess it is possible. The common thread though leads back to TWRP Nandroid backups.

Honestly, I don't know?

Part of me thinks if it's recurrent then it's hardware but I don't think it's random enough to be hardware. It could be TWRP but wouldn't miss people have had this problem?
I did notice something this afternoon whilst restoring backups, when restoring the system at the end of the restore and error occurred...

E: unable to unmount system.

This was the same every time I restored and the Wi-Fi was broken, the only backup that didn't have this error was the stock rooted 4.1.2 with no apps.
What's really frustrating is the backup I restored the night I fixed my Nexus 7 does this too, it's also the one that broke the Wi-Fi in the first place last week. I can't even restored the backup I made today before trying to restore my CM10 backup...

Aarrrgggghhhhh...my heads hurting again...

I am guessing that it is due to an app. Do you have any WiFi file sharing. or hotspot the apps?

I think it's hardware - probably the wi-fi module failing as it heats up.  I find it hard to believe your 4.1.1, TWRP, CWM, amd 4.1.2 TWRP and CWM restores all have issues.  When you get the one 4.1.2 restore that you think works, I'll bet wi-fi will fail if you use your N7 for a day.

OMG...

Flashed a 12th October build of CM10 and Wi-Fi was working, restored my stock backup (the one that originally broke Wi-Fi), I got no error and Wi-Fi is working...

I'm still confuzzled...but leaving it as is for now...

Does wifi break down after time or immediately after installing a backup?

Is your joystick/controller app wifi?

Wi-Fi is broken upon boot and my controller app is Bluetooth...

The only Wi-Fi app I have is Anysend.

Which build are you on JJ?  If it is 10/10/12, or earlier, you may need to install a new kernel via fast boot.  According to XDA, I guess they have had similar issues with the earlier builds as CM10's base changed, and therefore the kernel would break the WiFi.

Take a gander at the link to see if this helps at all.
