has anybody tried this? can i simply use a usb toethernet adaptor plugged into my usb otg cable or do i need one of the more expensive ones with an ic chip and what type should i get? they run anywhere from 10 bucks to 50.

Yes, you can use a OTG adapter to plug in certain USB to ethernet adapters. Some work, some do not. Check the links in this thread for ones that we know work.....

One note that might be helpful, is to make sure you plug the USB ethernet adapter into the OTG cable before plugging it into the Nexus 7. Also remember that you are powering the USB adapter from the battery in the Nexus 7, so expect the extra power drain.

many thanks for info--checked my router and the mac address of the gigabit is showing in the config screen but inactive. so i presume the gigabit is not compatible. tried the terminal command but eth0 not recognised. will checkout the links and see if i can get another one.

sorry for delay but had a few personal problems to sort out. after scouring the net and not really wanting to loose more money finally settled on one of those fruits that cannot be named :( --i know totally wrong but it just worked without any hassle. ;D i can now access the net in parts of the house that my wifi does not work via my devolo plugins.
