Title: lan media server and apk backup
Post by: matt on October 20, 2012, 08:50:49 AM
I've seen a few portable media servers but I might make my own. Using a raspberry pi, an ssd, and a li-ion battery. Plug into router via ethernet for nas box, unplug and use for portable WiFi hotspot.

I just got the nexus on my lan, had to remove all windows home groups and add access to everyone.
Getting windows to do the samba is like teaching a cat to scuba dive.

Using ES file explorer have successfully played 1080p wtv movies over lan with MX player.
Can backup APks, to internal memory then move to nas.

Anyone interested? Non-rooted.

If you fail to understand what Matt has done, Raspberry Pi is an ARM GNU/Linux box originally designed to sell for about $25, and if memory serves me correctly, was designed to promote the learning of Linux. Matt, the Linux programing required to connect the Raspberry Pi to external storage and set it up as a media server would probably be over my head, so perhaps you can start off with an explanation of the Raspberry Pi program and it's current state.

Yes it would take me too long, I'll leave it to experts. :o

Rather than reinvent the wheel, I scooted over to Fry's this am and bought one.
Gauntlet wireless 320gB drive for 139$ can upgrade to ssd or 2tB mech drive.
Li-ion battery good for 5.5 hrs.
8 simultaneous users on WiFi.
USB 3 connector. (When WiFi is off)
A version w/o drive is 99$. No Ethernet but is 802.11n WiFi with WiFi pass thru.
My router is only 802.11g so it should speed up my wireless LAN.
Gauntlet streaming apps available but I may just play with file explorer as apps only stream 720p.

Not really endorsing these products, just what I've got working so far. Titanium may work also.
About to unbox and test gauntlet.

Works like a glove, fits like a hammer, if I only had charm. Thx.

Success with gauntlet app (check it out on gplay) downloaded firmware to tablet, unzipped and sent to gauntlet, updated. U/l & d/l work with app. Need to configure ES fe to samba share still.

Internet pass through not yet functional, could be because of 802.11n to g incompatible?

Or just see it as attached network drive instead of range extender?

So many questions, so few brains. Need to find gauntlet forum.
Update: changing router encryption to WPA/wpa2 fixed the problem somehow.
Device works as advertised. Update: not quite.
File transfers have been with USB from computer. Computer fails to see attached drive over WiFi.
Some linux/win7 incompatibility here, may need a firmware fix or be related to networking post.
Gauntlet os is busybox linux.

You have inspired me to buy a Raspberry Pi and learn Linux. I appreciate that.

Please don't blame me, my first post was theoretical blue sky imagining.
I would link to raspi threads but must respect protocols from overlords.

Awaiting gauntlet forum response..................... :P
Update: Official Gauntlet forum is a mess, fixing problems through pm and not posting solutions.
Through trial and error changed router encryption to fix problem.

Been reading Raspberry Pi threads all night. The 512 is on backorder. I'm waiting for an email when they are available. I can't wait to get one. Now I just need to learn to write code. ::)
