Title: Cant connect to Laptop running Ubuntu
Post by: zalanz on November 04, 2012, 05:13:03 AM
Hello
COMPLETE computer illiterate here!  so much so, that I am now the proud owner of the Nexus7 32GB after totally destroying my Galaxy Tab in trying to upgrade the software to ICS,
I vow not to root or upgrade this one other than offered downloads.

However I am so disappointed that I cant connect to my laptop running Ubuntu.  It was not a problem with the Galaxy tab so I am baffled.

Is there an easy fix?  and I mean EASY

Hope you can help, as I might try and get my money back and get another SaMSUNG

Yes, there are several, some easier than others. I find by far the simplest method is to use ftp. You must have a WiFi network with both the nexus seven and your Ubuntu PC logged on. Download a free package from the Play Store to your nexus 7 called ftpserver. Then download gftp from the Ubuntu software centre to your Ubuntu PC.
On the nexus seven, start ftpserver. You will see a simple screen with a start button. Turn it on. You will then see the screen update with the network address, something like 192.168.0.10, and the port number, something like 2221. The usernsme and password will also be displayed. Start FTP on the Ubuntu machine and enter those parameters. You will now be connected and be able to transfer files backward and forward between the two machines using the browser panes built in to gftp. Let me know if you need screenshots to make it clearer.

Thanks
Appreciate that. However can I get the N7 to easily recognise a memory stick?

You can use an OTG cable to connect a USB drive, but without root, you will not be able to save to the USB drive from your Nexus 7. So it is only a one way street without root , so to speak.

Filemanager HD can see any of your Samba (SMB) shared folders on your Ubuntu machine, mine works a treat! faster than Wifi file explorer too!

I run Ubuntu 12.04 on my laptop and I use a nice little program that can be found in the Ubuntu software center call gmtp. Just download gmtp on you Ubuntu PC then start the program. Plug in your nexus 7 into a USB port and click the connect button on gmtp. Wait about 20 seconds or so and you will have access to our nexus 7 internal SD.

Sent from my Nexus 7 using Xparent Green Tapatalk 2

using gmtp in linux--you will not see an icon to show your nexus7 but open the program and simply hit the connect button and your nexus7 structure will become visible.
