Title: Just Found 'TV Portal'
Post by: radiocycle on November 05, 2012, 10:49:33 AM
For you boob-tube fans out there, you might want to check out 'TV Portal' in GP.  Looks pretty cool and the 'upgraded' version is only 99ยข.  A HUGE list of TV programs and also a good amount of movies.  Works most excellent with MX Player.  I see there are other TV type apps but this is the only one I've tried so I can't compare, but this one does seem to work well on our tab.

Wow, I'm really impressed. Fantastic selection. The odd link fails or is slow but generally it's superb. Thanks very much for the heads up.

And fantastic support. Video was choppy with MX player. Used bsplayer free with system decode and other tweaks.

Works great so far.

I don't think they can. Its an aggregator of already existing videos on the web.

They can and will do whatever they like.   Seen how they act with Kim Dotcom and Megaupload ?   Have you used Napster lately ? LOL  If you still think we live in a free country in the USA, you should think again.  Even the Dept of Education has SWAT Teams, for pity's sake.

For some strange reason, the app no longer shows up in the Google App store now altho my copy still works....  but stay tuned.

Touche. Of course freedom is an illusion, complete freedom is anarchy.
It's all a balancing act.
Law vs freedom
Chaos vs heat death
Dogma vs insight

I wonder if windows had not been so heavily pirated whether OS/2 would have dominated.
And if a program which points to possibly copyright infringed content is an abettor of illegality, then a forum which reviews that program is not?
Its up to the copyright holders to find the actual violations and have them removed, no program or third party has that ability or right imo.

Maybe I'm atypical.

I recorded late night radio shows in the 60s on reel to reel and found new artists and music which led me to buying a lot of vinyl.

I recorded onto cassettes in the 70s and traded with friends which led me to buying a ton of CDs.

I've swapped MP3s and discovered new music to enjoy and purchase.

I've watched lofi vids and bought the movies.

I've gotten apps from black market to try on my tablet and purchased those I had a use for.

A canny marketer would know that a certain level of " piracy " is beneficial to market penetration.
Some of this content may actually be sanctioned. I cannot tell.

The losses reported due to piracy are overblown. If a kid  amasses a huge store of MP3s in a game of acquisition it has to be balanced against what his allowance would have actually purchased if piracy was not an option. And the trading of this content might have increased the fan base of many artists leading to future revenue.

So a program that points to content may actually serve a greater purpose by identifying illegal sites and allowing legal file share.

If content servers would realize that charging what the market will bear is not the same as maximizing return the prices for online music, books, and vids would drop dramatically and result in greater profit margin with less piracy. But protecting the established printing, distributing and retail merchants seems to be the status quo.

Poorly, but I have written.

I don't think you are atypical. I  do feel a  need to respect the community here so I will try to watch what I say.
I think You should be hired as a consultant for the law team of one of of these high profile piracy defense cases that are in the news lately. I agree that a lot of the media that gets traded would not be heard or like you said advertised without peer to peer. Bottom line as ridiculous as it seems, it is a crime that can be taken very seriously if the gun somehow gets aimed at you.
On another note same vein. I work in a restaurant. We get calls every so often from "telemarketers" asking what kind of music do you listen to in your dining room? If you answer with any type aside from Muzak you get blackmailed or  shaken down for $. Apparently, It is illegal to play cds or music that you own( have really bought) in a business without paying another premium to the record companies and I guess partly the artists. They threaten to report you and I have seen letters where there are supposed fines involved.
Brutal.
With my 100 plus gigs of music I will probably be hanged in the streets of Tehran.. I mean DC

Sorry, Anger+Coffee=Rant. Let my passion overcome me and became bombastic blowhard.

As a musician, I have heard both sides of the argument. Those who are only in it for the money vs those who have an urge to create and share.

Technically, every bar band should be paying royalties for the songs they cover. Might be a good thing if they did, original music instead of top 40 might draw me back to the bar scene.

I remember of all bands, musicians, people it was Lars Ulrich and Metallica that started this whole BS. A musician myself, I used to respect them back in the eighties when they basically paid for their first recordings and would give them away. They pretty much preached that it was all about the music and to F@# &! The Man. They were the torch carriers for the "never sell out" movement and then they end up starting a greed revolution. Ultimate Hypocrisy. The name of their next album.

So, they pulled the app - let me check if my app still runs ....brb .....  yep still runs !!

I still like it a lot.

Yeh, the whole deal with music and video copyrights is all twisted out of all reality, but greed does wondrous things to humanz.... LOL

It certainly bears little resemblance to the original intent when big corps own the music copyright and the original artist has to beg for residuals... stupid for them to sign away their rights, stupid for the legal system to allow such goings on.

If I remember right, 2.5% goes to band and 2.5% to copyright owner. With tunecore e.g. a fee of 10$ gets your music on iTunes, amazon etc. and all money goes to you.

I'm not advocating piracy, I realize that under current law copyright owners not doing their due diligence and going after violations run the risk of their work becoming public domain. I'm looking for balance and uncommon sense.

If I define everything in absolutes, it's only to find that balance.

Maybe we need a paradigm shift, if there were a format change from CDs to DVD audio I would have to rebuy everything once again. 24 bit 192khz 5.1 surround with CD image and MP3s and liner notes, artwork, interviews, performances, lyrics etc. would be a massive download and more economical to buy than pirate. Then I would need better speakers and amp. Everything is mixed these days with too much limiting and compression and reamping to make a maximum volume at the expense of dynamics.

I do not find that this app is doing anything unethical.  The app serves as a directory of internet sources that are offering a video stream.  The app inputs the source URL into the media player of your choice.  Even the profit made by the paid version is compensation for the convenience of the app, not the rights to the media.

I am not in opposition to digital media streaming or sharing.  When a third party circumvents the DRM and in turn makes profits by distrubuting that media directly, a different can or worms is opened.

I do not see the P2P file sharing as a cut into the profits of any artist or actor.  In the case of visual media, profits are made from merchandise, box office sales, and third party advertising.  A television channel makes money from the commercials.  Movies actors make the money from the box office.  The DVD sales are not the main source of revenue.  This is fracitonal in comparison.  If a consumer watches visual media without making compensation because of the convenience, this is no different than if they would have otherwise not watched it if compensation was required.

With auditory media, the artists make their revenue in concert tickets and merchandise.  The album sales is again fractional in comparison.  Any "true" artist should be giving their music away just for the advertising so that in return those consumers would pay for the experience of a live concert which cannot in any way be captured into an audio recording.

So piracy? Eh, I don't think so.. more like free advertising.

In a nutshell. Who should be just damn grateful for their success? The average person finishing their download or the band with the 500 women and piles of money that is being"exploited"

I love it when support doesn't pull the non mea culpa it's the hardware routine.

So maybe lofi should be freeware and a loss leader to premium content.

Cool Loocid. Did yours update automatically? I had problems so they sent me a code. As far as I know they are going to release on Amazon and a couple other stores. The locations  are listed on their Facebook page. Google isn't allowing them to post it at the moment.
I would have never known about a new version but I wiped my device and couldn't find my apk that I had saved. Then I noticed it missing from the store again. The developers are cool. I talked to Mike a couple times. They are two kids that go to Auburn. The app is a side project. They do a really good job with servicing. I like that.

I agree with the service. I have dealt with Mike too. Very helpful...

The chromecast plugin and premium app unlocker are now available on Google play. The main app is on http://m.slideme.org/application/tv-portal.
Tv portal is having server problems at the moment, should clear up shortly.

If you've previously unlocked the program and the update reverts to ads, email the dev for an easy fix.
