Is the additional $20 ($69.95!) of the Otterbox worth it? Just when I thought the $50 for the Gumdrop was a bit over the top, now comes some one-upmanship from Otterbox

I am a little biased, I liked the Otterbox Defender for my iphone, DID NOT like the Gumdrop case for my Kindle Fire.
-
I can't tell what the outer most layer is on the otter box. If its hard plastic like their phone cases I would like it a little more than my gumdrop but if its rubber on the outside (excluding that goofy kick stand) than the gumdrop is better.
-
Actually I kinda like that goofy kick stand. :D
I think you can put it either on the back or the front. On the front it would be a great screen protector. No need to worry about impacts from keys and stuff. Just dump your Nexus in your bag and forget about it.

I can see that but they both have a screen protector that works really well.

I really didn't like the screen protector on the Gum Drop (Kindle Fire edition).

Its part of this style of case they all have that feature.

I might be getting close to getting one of these. Is there anything new on this?

I got the Otterbox Defender Nexus 7 Case on Amazon for $52 (I've even seen these selling for $45 elsewhere). Great case so far, love the screen protector (no oil slicks, sticking, bubbles underneath), and love the snap on shield, that doubles as a kickstand. So far, like this way better than the Gumdrop case I had for my Kindle Fire.

I've been thinking about getting one too. What all do you like better about it?

Well I own them both now. The gum drop probably absorbs impact better but isn't as sleek. The otter box will just slide into a jacket pocket.
The kick stand cover thing is cool. Adds some extra protection and offers a solution to the added weight of rugged cases (that never really bothered me before though).
The otter box also has a cutout for the camera while the gum drop keeps it covered. I think its for image quality is why they didn't cover it but I never noticed any issues in image quality.
The otter box is wider though. I'm actually finding it a little uncomfortable as I type this
Overall both are solid cases. If you want something that is just a little easier to slide into your pocket and has a stand the otter box is for you. If you want ultimate protection that is a little easier to mange, gumdrop.
