Title: You REALLY don't want the battery to die on the N7
Post by: Tronmech on November 14, 2012, 11:21:07 PM
I ran my n7 dry this evening, and all hell broke loose. Every time I plugged it into the wall charger, it would sit for a few minutes, and them try to do a normal boot.

This not attempt would drain the battery of the half percent charge it had and cause the tablet to ALMOST shut down.

I THINK I did this to get out of it.
1) plugged in and waited for the boot animation.
2) pulled the USB cord
3) held down the power button to force shutdown.
4) plugged into my PC.
5) got the charging anim this time.

I also managed to get into he boot loader long enough to revert to the stock recovery, but I tried at least twice after that flash to no effect.

You tried to flash on a dead battery? This is an absolute Android law breaker. That is one of the only known ways to actually brick a Nexus! Just asking for issues!

I usually make sure I have at least an hour of charge time on any device when talking  about flashing Roms.

At least 50% battery is recommended...

Trust me, it was only out of desperation that I flashed recovery on a dead battery. Since it was the only non stock firmware on the system, I thought that there may have been an interaction between the new boot and the TWRP recovery. Having flashed earlier in the day, I knew that I could get stock recovery back on the tablet if I was very quick. I knew I had about a minute in the bootloader, so the command was sitting waiting for the bootloader to come up.

In any event, it seems that yanking the charger and immediately forcing the tablet to power off allowed the system to behave correctly when I next plugged it in. The best thing is to not let the battery drain that much.

Replying to myself... The only reason I even tried this was because the tablet WOULD NOT CHARGE when plugged in with power off. It would boot the os instead, which would soak up what charge it was able to get, and power right back off. And it would repeat this over and over.

I have heard of issues with CWM not allowing the battery to not accept a charge in some devices once it drops typos critical level. I've never encountered that with TWRP.

Is the cord or adapter bad? If not sounds like time for a factory reset and or RMA

I have run my battery out several times and never had any problems.

I had run it out at least once before as well. This battery-caused bootloop was a huge surprise. I think the "fix" was to yank the USB cord during the boot and force power off by holding the power key. The next time I put the USB cord in after that, I got the charging animation and not the boot animation.

Why are you using the PC to charge instead of the wall adapter?

I had a similar problem after battery ran dry after a couple of days on standby. (This surprised me because I thought I was in aeroplane mode and previous rate of discharge should have left me with some charge left).

There was no sign of activity after I plugged charger into the wall socket and it took a lot of button pressing and holding, plugging and unplugging before I got the charging icon showing.  I still don't know what combination of actions got me out of the problem.

It may have been because the 2 parts of the UK charger/plug which have to lock firmly into each other were not properly seated initially.

It gave me a scare :)
