Title: Best Case/Cover For Nexus7
Post by: kyoo on July 12, 2012, 08:32:42 PM
Tons of covers have been starting to come in - whats your choice?

A talk about this started a little with the discovery of the wake/sleep magnetic feature - however, I'm not a fan of the Asus official covers - so what are you guys going with?

This one http://www.amazon.com/i-BLASON-Google-Genuine-Leather-Warranty/dp/B008GEHWWQ/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1342058414&sr=8-4&keywords=nexus%20covers&tag=vglnkc4944-20 (http://www.amazon.com/i-BLASON-Google-Genuine-Leather-Warranty/dp/B008GEHWWQ/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1342058414&sr=8-4&keywords=nexus%20covers&tag=vglnkc4944-20) was mentioned in the other thread as well, but I'm wondering if that auto wake/sleep function is genuine - they had to have gotten their hands on one from the developer conference to have been able to discover that feature right?

I guess no one can really confirm if it works either too. Anyone else have any good choices?

It's hard to really add to this topic since we don have them yet, and there will be lots more covers in the coming month or so...

Less is more for me when it comes to a case for my N7. I got a very nice leather case for my Acer A100 by Poet. It made the tablet too thick for my taste. It almost doubled the thickness of the tablet. Since the back of the N7 is rubberized, I might only put a good screen protector on it and be done.

I haven't made a selection yet, but I've noticed that quite a few are appearing on Amazon/eBay. I'm looking for a few things in a case:
* A decent stand built into it, so the Nexus can safely sit in landscape or portrait mode. Book-reading will account for at least 50% of my usage, so I need it to be able to sit by itself at a decent viewing angle.
* One piece preferred. My girlfriend has a one piece Belkin case for her Acer Iconia that I like; it's a wrap-around cover that also has doubles as a stand.

I like the price and look of this cover:
http://www.amazon.com/rooCASE-Multi-Angle-Google-Tablet-Automatically/dp/B008F05Q2E/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1342279461&sr=1-1&keywords=nexus+7+roo+case (http://www.amazon.com/rooCASE-Multi-Angle-Google-Tablet-Automatically/dp/B008F05Q2E/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1342279461&sr=1-1&keywords=nexus+7+roo+case)
However, it doesn't appear to support portrait mode stand support. That's not as important as landscape stand support to me , as I generally find it a bit more comfortable to read in landscape mode on her Acer (though I guess that orientation might break atypical formatting in a book with meaningful spaces/images/paragraphing/etc.)

You will sadly disappointed. The n7 will only do landscape mode with videos. Even the YouTube app won't shift to landscape until the video starts.

Urgh! I thought it was only the home screen that was portrait-locked. Fortunately it looks like some XDA folks have come up with a workaround to get landscape mode working on the n7.

They showed someone watching the transformers movie in landscape.  So why wouldnt youtube work in landscape?

Even if it does not, im sure google will issue an update to fix this.

It does work in landscape.  The only thing that is 'fixed' in landscape that I'm aware of is the Home screen.  But even that has already been remedied.  See:

Any updates and recommendations on cases?  I just received one I ordered on eBay.  http://www.ebay.com/itm/221063370388?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2648#ht_6289wt_1185 (http://www.ebay.com/itm/221063370388?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2648#ht_6289wt_1185) but the fit is a bit sloppy, front camera is not centered in cutout, powerbutton and volume keys are hard to reach.  It was cheap and no shipping, so I will use until I find a better one.

I ordered the black version of the case, and like it. And, yes, the open/close magnetic strip does work as you've heard. One of the reasons why I opted for this particular case style is because it offers two cases. The tablet slides into the primary sleeve case, which itself adheres to the portfolio's outer case by velcro. It lets me use the tablet, protected by the sleeve case, without having to fold the portfolio case backwards onto itself. Very convenient when I want to muck around with my tablet minus the extra bulk! I also ordered a set of stylus pens for the first time ever, and am enjoying those as well—although there are plenty of times when it's just faster to touch the screen and do what I have to do for selection and navigation.

However, having touted the case, here's the caveat:

If you read the reviews of the seller, you'll see a pretty consistent series of complaints about the seller's shipping process itself. Here's my review, which can also be seen http://www.amazon.com/gp/aag/details/ref=aag_m_fb?ie=UTF8&isAmazonFulfilled=&marketplaceID=ATVPDKIKX0DER&isCBA=&asin=&seller=A209HAH4Z0MGU9# (http://www.amazon.com/gp/aag/details/ref=aag_m_fb?ie=UTF8&isAmazonFulfilled=&marketplaceID=ATVPDKIKX0DER&isCBA=&asin=&seller=A209HAH4Z0MGU9#) here.

"Item was as described and is suitable for Nexus 7. Also enjoy the separable casing apart from portfolio. Shipping process experience left me feeling neutral about transaction: according to the seller's own shipping policy, they ship all items within two days of receiving order or will notify otherwise. Received NO notification, AND I was left with late shipment and delivery. Mixed bag here."

Within minutes of my leaving the feedback, they sent me an email offering to refund my shipping costs ($3.99) on condition that I pull my review. I declined the offer, a bit irritated that their email felt more like a bribe than an attempt to leave this particular customer without a bad taste in my mouth.

The portfolio is great. The shipping part of it? As a potential buyer, you have a right to be fully informed ahead of time.

Hi All

Just received Koolertron Google Nexus 7" Tablet PU Leather Case Cover with Separable Removable Wireless Bluetooth Keyboard
purched from U.K. Amazon at around £22. So far I am extremely impressed. Features removeable bluetooth keyboard adjustable stand in fact haven't found  flaw yet.

Good

I use the Orientation mode app from the Play Store.  You can even lock the home screen in landscape.

For a case, I bought one of the cheap blue gel eBay cases.  Just a little insurance around the home, but the Nexus looks too pretty to leave the house in a gel case.

I got the Poetic case from Amazon with the built in Bluetooth keyboard.  Great quality leather and build.  Keyboard pared first try.  For 24.95 you can't beat it.

Good Question!
My 2-cents worth.  Need to first decide on the purpose served by YOUR case.

My needs are: protect the screen; protect N7 from bump and drop damage; light in weight; good tight fit; carry all my N7 junk - (stylus, cleaning cloth, earphones, cable, flash drive, SD reader, pen and paper - perhaps a charger cube).

N7 is so light and easy to hold that I'll probably be using it out of the case.

Seems that fitted cases add too much weight and bulk (for me).  Also, little room for storage.  My best choice is a small neoprene case with exterior storage pouch. No need for access to N7 ports and buttons.  Generic is just fine.   Not very stylish -- but very practical (for me).  Probably can find one for under $10.

The ones at PC World (http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/asus-nexus-7-cover-cool-grey-17259589-pdt.html) look good, although a bit pricey:

Available in other colours as well.

Well, I first bought a $6 Neoprene cover on Amazon  to protect the Nexus 7 while in my briefcase.
http://www.amazon.com/Neoprene-Accessories-Includes-keychain-MDK2G2B1/dp/B008BXR5B0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1347159507&sr=8-1&keywords=Black+Neoprene+With+Zipper+Outside+Pocket+For+Extra+Accessories (http://www.amazon.com/Neoprene-Accessories-Includes-keychain-MDK2G2B1/dp/B008BXR5B0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1347159507&sr=8-1&keywords=Black+Neoprene+With+Zipper+Outside+Pocket+For+Extra+Accessories)

It worked fine but is useful only for packing..    I really wanted a book like case similar to the one I used with my old Kindle.  I found the "Google Nexus 7 Tablet Slim Fit Leather Case (Deep Blue) with Stand by Supcase (TM)" on Amazon Prime and ordered it:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008I0E7X0/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00 (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008I0E7X0/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00)

I am very happy with it.  The quality is excellent and I really like that it turns off the tablet for me when I close it. The Nexus has not been out of the case since I received it.

Well then I recently ran into the "Rothco Brown Canvas Small Travel Portfolio Shoulder Bag" for $15 on Amazon Prime and could not resist ordering it:
http://www.amazon.com/Brown-Canvas-Travel-Portfolio-Shoulder/dp/B005K90RF4/ref=cm_pdp_rev_itm_title_1 (http://www.amazon.com/Brown-Canvas-Travel-Portfolio-Shoulder/dp/B005K90RF4/ref=cm_pdp_rev_itm_title_1)

It came in this week and I am really pleased with it.  Looks and feels like canvas but is actually cotton, so not as heavy. Really well made and a steal for the price. PLUS, the Nexus with leather case fits in the bag like it was made for it!

I think I have enough cases now!

I am usually not cheap with my accessories but I just can't bring myself to pay close to $40 for a case. Most of the ones I see don't protect the device any better than the one I bought at 5 below for $5. If you open it like a upside down V, it even stands. Actually, The one with the keyboard posted in the link by Alderson is cool though. I would pay 30 for that.

Hi there guys I am YoshiDrei81601 from the Philippines and I just bought a new case for my Nexus 7. It is called the FlipJacket for Nexus 7 by Capdase Products which is from Hongkong ,China. It has a "folio" type design which I find to be very elegant and classy looking for daily usage. It also has a very good build quality even though it is from China. It has a stand which is built into it for watching movies, typing, or browsing the Internet. It also covers the silver part of the screen which makes it look like a Google I/O edition Nexus 7. And it also covers the left side of the screen which makes me very happy because I will not see the "screen lift" issue anymore ;D .  - Yoshi-

I really like the looks of that case that comes in all different colors.  I looks similar to my roocase 'cept I think mine only came in black.  I like having a choice of colors...  But how well does it fold back on itself, Rich??  That's the way I use mine 99% of the time.

I can't give enough stars to this case after usng it for a week: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008RX2ZV4/ref=oh_details_o06_s01_i00 (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008RX2ZV4/ref=oh_details_o06_s01_i00)

Thin as can be and hardly adds any thicknes to the device so it really does slip into back jeans pockets.  So far I haven't been stupid enough to sit down fogetting its there.  N7 slides in and out quite easy so I can easily pull out to mount in car.  Case magnets work like a charm.  And only $11.99!!!  Best case I've bought ever I think for any device.

Hey...

Thanks jonv!  Just what I was looking for.  I just placed my order for the blue one.  I have a 'rooCASE' which I do like, but I wanted something without all the bulk.  The rooCASE just adds so much bulk that the N7 seems like a big handful and that kind of defeats the purpose of a tablet IMO.  Thanks for the heads up!

The couple of things that I want out of a case are as follows:

Something that protects but doesn't add too much bulk.  Part of the fun of a tab, for me, is how light and thin they are.  Next, the case has to have a "lid" or a cover that makes use of the auto sleep function.  I've really grown accustomed to that feature with my current rooCase.  And it has to be able to fold back on itself.  That cover is a must-have for me, BUT it has to get out of the way when I'm using the tablet.  I don't want to have to use two hands, like I'm holding a big heavy book or something.  And I don't find myself setting it down in one of the tilt-back positions anyway so no need for the multiple viewing angles set ups.  Lastly, black is sooo boring...  I like some color options.

 Just my 2¢ worth...

I'm trying to talk myself into buying this case: http://www.speckproducts.com/fitfolio-for-google-nexus-7.html (http://www.speckproducts.com/fitfolio-for-google-nexus-7.html) If I didn't already have two cases I'd buy it in a flash.

It looks nice and light weight and doesn't get in the way on the bezel so that you can't easily swipe down from the top.  I like the colors and the fact that it's not real leather.  I got a note from the manufacture telling me that if I bought it on their site, and didn't like it for any reason, they would give me a full refund.  Thinkin' I might go for it....

Poetic Slimline is perfect.   Its incredible thin and isnbasiczlly like the cover for the iPad.   It has a magnet inside that turns screen on off when you open or close the cover.  The cover has a microfiber on the inside that protects and cleans the screen.  The cover can also fold into a stand for viewing.... best value at $15 on amazon.

I've been searching for a case for my wife's N7.  This one  isn't available on Amazon until October 31 (http://www.amazon.com/Poetic-SLIMLINE-Portfolio-Android-Version/dp/B009OKZ3W2/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1350587188&sr=8-2&keywords=Poetic+Slimline).  Price will be $24.95.  It looks like the black case will be available on October 22 (http://www.amazon.com/Poetic-Slimline-Portfolio-Automatically-Manufacturer/dp/B008NMCPTQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1350587188&sr=8-1&keywords=Poetic+Slimline) for the same price.

I am very please with my paxham Moko Slim Fit I got on Amazon.  This along with a screen shield is essential equipment.  The Moko has improved by N7 experience exponentially. I very much disliked handling my naked tablet.  Now it feels comfortable in my hand, fits like a glove and looks great.  I like the auto on/off feature too.  All for under $15.  Couldn't ask for more.

Did you design it? The reason I ask is you stated your alias with the name of the cover.
I agree. The feel of the naked tablet just screams for some sort of clothing. I haven't upgraded to anything electronic or magnetic yet. I use a little cheapie from 5 Below. It protects it to the minimum but I like that in a way. I prop it up like a partially open book on its pages and it serves as a decent stand. I can say that the Nexus can take a beating because she has been knocked over many times. I had it set up on a chair at a picnic watching the Philadelphia Eagles game with a bunch of people. They didn't quite get that the sometimes bad reception came from the fact I was using my phone as a hot spot and a Slingbox to stream the Live tv to the tablet. Moving the chair just knocked my Nexus down. They thought they could move it around like an old antenna tv. They call us computer geeks?

My case is from a reliable manufacturer in HongKong called CapDase. It is a silicon like case that is sewed into a leather flip case which has long indents to slide the tablet into. It also makes your tablet look like the I/O edition Nexus 7. It also covers the screen lift problem which absolutely solves my OCD problems for my tablet. -Yoshi-

I notice that the case shown in this link is the old style Poetic case. They've updated the case at least a couple times, one of the problems being that when you folded back the cover to read the N7 like a book, the magnet would put the tab to sleep. Also, the latest version doesn't have the hand strap. So, my question, are you encountering any sleep probs, etc. with this case? I actually like the idea of that hand strap.

And yes, please do update us on this keyboard. I purchased the Logitech bluetooth tablet keyboard, but had I seen this one beforehand, I may have made a different choice. I'm okay with the Logitech, but this aluminum case looks very cool....

I went a few cases. RooCASE Executive,Clear S Wave TPU, a neoprene pouch & a hard zippered case. The RooCASE is my favorite which I slip into the neoprene pouch on the go. I went with anti-glare screen protectors. (http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp155/mouse2k8/Mouse/2012-07-27234620.jpg)

You're braver than me.  If it can be dropped, I know that eventually I'm going to drop it.  When I get something new, I get a case at the same time.

I have dropped mine as well. Luckily it has a little bit of protection with a cheapie cloth case. I just bought a 32. I am considering my options. Do I disrobe the 16?

I'm a bit picky with cases. Must:
1. Not cover the bezel
2. Not add too much bulk or weight
3. Turn into a stand.

When I first got my N7 I bought one of the cheap Ebay magnetic smart cases that people were talking about on XDA. Sounded perfect.

But alas, quality control (if it actually exists) isn't so good.  Both cases have ended up with cracks in the corner of the case.

It's a pity as this stand suits me prefectly :(

Of course there's probably 100s of Chinese factories pumping out the "same" cases so I could order from another seller and get a good one but then again I might get a worse one.

Still on the search for the "Goldilocks" case :)

My experiences with this case here:

Tons of covers have been starting to come in - whats your choice?

A talk about this started a little with the discovery of the wake/sleep magnetic feature - however, I'm not a fan of the Asus official covers - so what are you guys going with?
Anyone else have any good choices?

I have had good results with Caseen folio type cases. Very well made, good prices on Amazon and ebay. Had one for my Transformer and have friends with them on other tablets. Check out what they have here:
http://www.caseen.com/Nexus-7_c_52.html (http://www.caseen.com/Nexus-7_c_52.html)

and then shop for what you want on the other sites I mentioned. I just order one for my Nexus 7.

Ya know, my only problem with those cases is that it looks like there is a little cut-out for the camera.  I have a case with a cut-out for the camdamera and so the case is cut to just fit the screen.  Therefore, whenever I want to swipe down to check notifications, the case gets in the way.  I have to work at getting my fat finger high enough, by pushing up on the case, to drag the notifications down.  IMHO, they should just cut the inside of the case to a larger overall circumference so that you can more easily swipe down from the top of the screen...

As I look at the pictures on that link you provide, it does look like maybe the have made a 'notch' where the camera is so that you could fit your finger there without much trouble; that would be a lot better...

I have to revise my assessment of the Caseen case. They've changed it. I bought another one for my wife, and while they've changed the camera cutout so the navigation pull down is easier, you now have to force the tablet into the case and the cover doesn't close so the magnet closure is useless. I bought it on Amazon. I called  Caseen to see if they would swap it for a good one and they refused, so back to Amazon it goes. I'll look for another brand for a case. Too bad, all my previous Caseen cases were very good.
