Title: Official 4.2 issues thread
Post by: fxsarge on November 17, 2012, 12:12:11 AM
Didn't see one of these but if so I apologize. If you have see any issues report them here.

I noticed I can no longer stream Bluetooth audio to my Bose speaker with wifi on at the same time. Pretty big deal for me.

I've been having this too.

Would rooting and installing a Custom ROM eliminate the WiFi disconnection issue?

So far this is my only unrooted Android device, but if rooting will fix this irritating WiFi problem then I'll have to.

:( The back light has started to flicker since the update. Battery is fully charged so I wonder if background tasks are more busy and pulling the power.
Also I noticed that when I save an image in Chrome, pictures are downloading with a grey bar across the image, and several times the downloads are "unsucessful", going to the image gallery I can do a re-download, but having to check each one is a bit of a pain. It was never a problem with JB4.1.2

Solved the backlight problem! (Well some helpful guy on this forum did).
4.2 defaults the "brightness" setting to "auto", so a quick toggle off and a manual adjustment and it's sorted. ;D

I can stream but it is choppy when I turn the bluetooth speaker on. This is not a new problem for me. I had it with my last device and troubleshooted every which way but loose. I can't figure out except that WiFi and bluetooth together don't work well on my Nexus.
I also have quite a bit of lag while typing sometimes. I am thinking about doing a reset and then handpicking my apps one by one to see if I can pinpoint the issue. I have over 10 gigs of open space so that shouldn't be any issue.

The bottom line of this is "Does 4.2 do more harm than good?".  I haven't heard all that much regarding benefits of this upgrade.
While I'll probably not be affected by the problems cited (so far) I'm wondering if I should wait a while before updating to 4.2 ?
My current OS 4.1.2 is running just fine!

Your opinion?

I will wait a bit.  I got the OTA 4.2 update yesterday.  It did not install b/c I am rooted (happily) on 4.1.2.  I dinked with Wug Fresh 1.5.5 tool kit and decided to wait for his soon to come 1.6 version.  Those developers do a good job of sorting things out for us rookies.  On the down side you learn less when you stay away from the bleeding edge.  For me with 4.2 the benefits of the new features do not outweigh potential negatives of stickmount not working, wifi/bluetooth irregularities and other possible issues. I like to stay current, but this time I will sit in the pocket for awhile.  I appreciate the work others are doing here fixing things and identifying problems as well as new features.

I think that is a good decision. I can't blame the new update for the recent woes I am experiencing but it sure does seem like a lot of coincidence. I can honestly say I was running smoother before. I am considering wiping this thing...

I have a 32GB Nexus 7, I've had no lag issues, no Wi-Fi or Bluetooth issues since the update.
When Google announced the 4.2 they dubbed it a maintenance update despite the new features 4.2 includes. The new features include, Multi user, Quick settings, gesture keyboard (swipe), Daydream, Lockscreen widgets etc. The whole OS with 4.2 is in my opinion is faster, smoother and generally an even better user experience than it was with 4.1.x.
I would encourage anybody to update their Nexus device to 4.2, I use most of the new features everyday and don't regret updating my Nexus 7.
If you really don't think you'll use the new features, it's your device, don't update it but you having a cutting edge device which if you don't update it won't be as cutting edge as it could be...

Yeah guys don't let this thread scare you from updating. 4.2.2 is just around the corner. I think these issues are no where near as bad as other tablets with OTA updates like Asus and Samsung.

Anyone else having calendar issues since the update?  I can't get my work calendar to show anymore, just my personal one.  I can't find the menu to select which ones to show.

I solved my problem by installing the free Business calendar app.  I can use it to select the calendars to view, and then see them in the default calendar which display I much prefer.

I agree, I've just unrooted my S2 and gone back to stock ICS because I wanted to use some apps that cannot be used on a rooted device and I think I've had more freezes and reboots than I did when it was running CM10.
OEM updates whether OTA or not often have far more bugs than Nexus devices, most of the issues people are encountering are 3rd party related such as applications and connection to 3rd party devices.

With the benefit of receiving the latest version of the Android OS, we will also see the apps that fail with the new OS and the efforts of developers to correct issues in their apps. I look for the apps that generate revenue to be fixed generally more quickly than the free ones. Also many developers support multiple apps, so your favorite app that is broken, may not be as high on their priority list as you would like, but give it some time and you will see it fixed. If you don't want to deal with app incompatibility, then monitor the compatibility issues in our forum and wait on the OS upgrade until development catches up to the latest version of Android.

OK, I've installed JB 4.2.  Everything seems to work just fine.
Operation seems a bit faster than with 4.1.2 but just an impression.
Google Clock widget has changed.  I liked the appearance of the old (analog) one better, but new one now includes stop-watch, count-down, and alarms.

There are free clock unlock screen alternative widgets on google play. Check the apps section for links.
They work as regular widgets too.

Post by: gp123 on November 20, 2012, 09:26:55 AM
After installing 4.2, Overdrive.com (library e-reader) needed to re-download my library books.  I noticed that Overdrive no longer displayed the cover-graphics for these books.  Other than that, the reader worked fine.

May not be directly related to new OS, but never had this happen with 4.1.2

There's an updated version of STICKMOUNT (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.chainfire.stickmount) that has been released.

What's in this version:
- Android Jelly Bean 4.2 related fixes
- Various bug fixes
- Various text changes
- exFAT mounting if "mount.exfat-fuse" is present
- Fixed mounting sdXXYY (as opposed to sdXY) block devices
- (Pro) Kill processes that are preventing unmounting
- (Pro) Trigger media scanner on (un)mount

updated both versions of the nexus toolkits. still having problems with both. with wugs i can complete back up and re-boot but when i close the dialogue box and the backup should be pushed to my PC. i get another dialogue with error message --line 11245(file c:program files(x86)wugfresh development etc. error subscript used with non array variable. tried removing and re-installing to different director--same fault. with twrp i can make a back up but after completion and re-booting should go into recovery but goes into the page with the android on its side with red exclamation mark. on re-booting go into bootloader and load twrp recovery image it does not find the backup. anyone got any ideas. had no problems with 4.1.2

The dead Android bootloader is a known bug in the 4.2 recovery. The Nexus 7 Toolkit lets you revert to the previous 3.34 recovery, or you can install TWRP or another custom recovery.

The lost backup locations are a result of 4.2's new directory structure. It will be a while before the developers patch their programs. I heard TWRP has a new version (3.21?)  that finds its backup.

I push my Nandroid backups from my PC, and pull them there for storage using the Nexus 7 Toolkit. No issues with that method.

Without s tool kit, can you boot into TWRP? The android with the red exclamation mark is part of stock recovery. You need to make sure TWRP is installed correctly first, and will renter TWRP after a reboot.

This is not just an issue with 4.2. The ability to enter recovery properly started with 4.0, and is not exclusive to the N7.

There is an issue with that method.  I tried a restore onto my new N7-16, running 4.2, and I pushed the backup files to sdcard/Clockworkmods, where CWM failed to find them.

I'm on my second Nexus 7 (dont ask)
The first one I did the 4.2 update, and got poor battery life (five hours) and the Media server service was regularly hitting 45% (More than the screen!.
On my second one, I've left it on 4.1 and media server is only around 3-4%. I havent done a battery life check yet as I've only had it 12 hours. Is anybody else getting heavy media server use on 4.2?
I've googled around and it seems a lot of 4.2 users are getting it.

??  Media Services is a catch-all, with modules that might be called by a movie player, magazine or book reader, music player, etc.

If your N7 goes into battery hog heaven, regardless of its OS, the solution is to find and close the rogue app.

Could it be that some apps that are included in the media server aren't optimised for Android 4.2.1 therefore they are hogging battery...

I've seen a similar 40% battery usage by Media Services, running 4.1. That's why blaming the OS is barking up the wrong tree, IMHO.
