Title: Help With Updating To 4.2
Post by: radiocycle on November 20, 2012, 02:48:00 PM
OK, so this post might need to be moved, not sure.  Anyway, I and still getting the 'reminders' that I have an update waiting (4.2).  But I've tried it a couple of times and it hasn't worked for me.  I'm rooted but I have not uninstalled any apps that I can remember...  I was hoping the update would go smoother than the 4.1.2 went.  I do have a psychedelic screen that comes on when I first boot up and maybe that is keeping the update from sticking?  But I really like that opening screen (is it the 'boot loader'?) And, I want to keep all the game progress that I've made on all the games I have.
On the 4.1.2 update, I just went back to factory stock and ran the update.  But then I had to load all the apps by hand and start all me games over again.  So, which type of backup should I use that will allow me to hve my custom start-up screen and also keep all the progress on my games.

I know this has been covered but I can't seem to get all the info organized to where I can follow it through from beginning to end.  I apologize for the need to rehash this.  Maybe someone with a lot of time on their hands could innumerate the steps for me??

Radio,

You're going to lose your psychedelic screen that comes on when you first boot up.  That's boot animation, and you can add it back with ROM Toolbox Lite after you upgrade.

The type of backup you want to keep all your game progress is a Titanium all user apps backup.
When you restore it, restore all apps + data.  Don't bother with system data, because you're overwriting your old system.  You can copy the whole TitaniumBackup directory to a flash drive or your PC, and restore it after the upgrade.

The preferred alternative is a full Nandroid backup with your OS and all apps, done via CWM or TWRP, done from your PC, with the backup pushed to the PC.  The upgrade to 4.2 is going to wipe your sdcard partition, and you'll lose your backup if it's stored on your N7.  You can't just copy a Clockworkmod directory with subdirectories to a flash drive or PC storage.  The MD5 checksums fail because the last modified bytes change when the directories are copied/moved.

Back up your internal memory by copy & pasting to your PC, run a batch backup with Titanium and flash the factory image with the Toolkit of your choice.
I would suggest flashing 4.1.2, root with a toolkit, backup root with Voodoo OTA RootKeeper, update to 4.2, restore root with Voodoo and then restore your internal memory from PC backup and apps with Titanium.

OK, now seriously... I've run the Ti Backup and it shows that most apps are backed up, but when I look at the backup folder by plugging into this pc, it is empty, no files.  I think they are all backed up, but the back up is only on the N7.  I have to move the backups to the pc, right??  I'm nervous about losing all my data...  It's a nice rainy day here and the perfect time to do this, I just hope I can pull it off; I'm getting so tired of those up-date messages popping up...

Do they show in the TiBu folder with a file explorer?

It could be the perils of MTP...

I would suggest backing then up to either a Thumb drive a la Stickmount or the Cloud ie Dropbox, might even be prudent to do both...

OK, looks like I have a backup using Wugfresh on my pc.  So now I guess my next step is to flash the whole thing back to stock using Rom Tool Kit, right?

You shouldn't need top copy the tibu files to a PC. You will have to redirect tibu to that folder after the update to restore the apps. Im concerned that the folder is empty. What is the direct location of the empty folder?

I looked at the file using ES File Explorer and found that the folder, indeed, had all the backups... Dunno why it was empty earlier...

Another suggestion, after you flash back to stock, make a nandroid backup. This way you only have to restore the backup before applying any system update, regardless of what changes you have made.

The folder is empty from a PC because like I said MTP doesn't like certain files and the reason radio is backing up with TiBu is because he has games he doesn't want to loose progress on and he is flashing a stock image because the 4.2 update won't take, flashing the stock image will wipe his N7 including the TiBu folder...

OK!  Most Excellent... Now I'm back to stock with 4.2!  I guess maybe 4.2.1 will be knocking soon (?).  Things are still downloading so I haven't tried to restore anything yet.  Should be very interesting...

Oh no!  I was trying to force the 4.2.1 update by clearing the data, and force stopping Google Services.  Then I went to check for system updates and the option isn't even there to check.  Also, now Google Services is GONE!  Where can I find GS and put it back??

Ah ha! Found GSF at the very bottom of the apps list!  Live and learn...

Are you sure you haven't disable it by mistake? If you have it'll be at the bottom of the App list...

If it really is missing here's a copy of the .apk and the .odex in my Dropbox, you'll need both...

GoogleServicesFramework.apk (http://db.tt/0fFSUoYF)

GoogleServicesFramework.odex (http://db.tt/AUcz7mOS)

EDIT: Just read your edit, you obviously disabled it by mistake...lol

OK, so I'm trying to regain root.  I run NTool Kit V1.6 and it looks like it's working... until the end.  The Team Win Recover Project comes up and on my pc it says "waiting for your device to finish booting back up".   I'm not sure which of the options to tap so it just sits there waiting.  There is the following boxes:  Install, Wipe, Backup, Restore, Mount, Settings, Advanced, Reboot.  Not sure how to proceed... any iders??

BTW, if I hit Reboot, the menu comes up: System, Power Off, Recovery, Bootloader... which road to choose?

Hmmm, OK now it booted and I tried (as it said) to open SuperSU but it told me, "There is no SU binary installed, and SuperSU cannot install it.  This is a problem!"  So I guess I try to root again??

Don't you have root keeper? Restore the su backup with it if you have it.
Ah so you started from scratch again. Doesn't that mean you have to run busy box first? I'm confused now.

Yes, I have Voodoo OTA RK but under 'status' it only has 2 boxes checked: Superuser app installed, and ?ststem supports root protection.

Hmm, what 'bout this?  Maybe I didn't hve the developer options turned on.  I was looking for it in this 4.2.1 and it wasn't in the same place as in 4.1.  So I found that weird dance that you have to do to turn the dev. options on.  Tap the build number 7 times (?)
So maybe now I'll try rooting again....

I'm not really sure why you lost root if you have root keeper installed and had a backup of the su. I am a little confused now that you rerooted. Not exactly sure where you are in the process.
Did you try and restore your su backup with root keeper? There is a button.

OK, so now I've got it rooted and all of my apps back... that was a long haul!

But now I'd like to try to get some of the game data back instead of having to start all over again.  I tried restoring from the file where I thought I made a back-up to, on this pc, but no luck.  I also hve some files, that I think contain data, in my dropbox but I'm not sure how to extract them.  ...Your're probably sayin', how'd you get them there in the first place... Maybe I can drag them to the N7 when opened on the pc.

Install Solid Explorer from GP with which you can access your Dropbox account and copy the TiBu backup folder back onto your N7, if you use your PC you'll just have the problems you previously had with files not showing et cetera...

Oh the perils of MTP...

Radio. How did you do it? Did you have a SU backup or you didn't bother with Rootkeeper? The app has buttons that's how you use it.

Oh I'm not sure, to tell the truth bjs.  Rootkeeper didn't have the buttons at first.  I guess it was a combo of things.  I had to find the 'hidden' developer options to check the debug mode.  Also a lot of operator error~ I was specifying my earlier build, not the current build (JOP40D) after the update.

I think I'll just be content in knowing that I have the most current update and that I'm rooted.  The data backups were just not happening.  I'll start over and enjoy my tab...

I'm a little confused, what were your steps exactly radio? Are you rooted and on 4.2??

Flashing the factory image wrote the whole of your device so if you backed up root before flashing the factory image then you'd have list the Voodoo OTA RK backup...

Yes, I'm on 4.2.1, but I won't be able to enumerate my steps I'm afraid...  I have a bunch of backup material on Dropbox but I didn't just put a folder there; I have a huge bunch of individual files that I cut and pasted there.  Most have .gz extentions(?)  I guess I didn't really do a good backup with Voodoo...  I do have a "!ready to flash" folder on my desktop but don't think that's what I want.  I think I have all of my programs but just think I don't hve any of the data for those apps available, or at least I don't know how to find it...

Titanium has both Dropbox and Google Drive options intergrated into the app, I've started to write a guide for Titanium but haven't had time to finish it...
If you use the intergrated options, TiBu creates a folder on your cloud storage similar to that on your devices memory and this way the files are collected together. Each apps backup is split into three files, one is a .tar.gz, another a .apk.gz which contains the application apk and the third doesn't have an extension but I believe is a properties file? All are required to restore from TiBu although the .apk.gz can be opened and I believe the application installed from this but no data will be restored this way.
I would create a folder on your cloud storage and move all the TiBu file to that folder, you'll then need to copy those folders to your N7's internal memory to be able to restore the backups...

OK Jay, yes I see all of those files and I've moved them into a folder in dropbox.  How do I get them from there into the internal mem?  When I look at the N7 with a usb cable on the pc, it looks (from the address) like it's all internal memory.  Would just moving a folder, with any name I assigned, in there be recognized ??

Sorry radio, I'm at work!

You need to name the folder on your internal memory...

TitaniumBackup

Written exactly like that so TiBu can locate the back files to restore them and anytime you redo your backups they be placed in that folder too, if you've install TiBu you may already have a folder with this name...
