Title: Accessing Data Across User Accounts?
Post by: blhnexus7 on November 20, 2012, 06:05:56 PM
I just got a N7, and have loaded a bunch of pictures and music on the device.  Then my son and I discovered the "User" feature, and he immediately set me up an account of my own.  Problem is, when I "log in" to my (new) user account, I don't seem to have access to the music/pictures from the original account.

I'm hoping there's a way to "share" data across accounts?

Thanks!

For the most part, data is segregated across users. Your best bet is to use Picassa and create a web album. This album can then be shared with both users and synced to the device without having to duplicate data.

Thanks for the reply, but I forgot to mention that I want to be able to access these pics/music without an Internet connection.

It just seems a little unfortunate (and memory consuming) to have to load the same pictures/music onto the N7 twice.

Thanks just the same.

Brian, I think this will be solved soon, as developers and users familiarize themselves with Android 4.2.  Right now, your original music is stored in mnt/shell/emulated/0/music, and your new account looks for its music in mnt/shell/emulated/1/music.  Each user only sees sdcard/music, with his account following its individual path to his music.

I'm sure it will be easy for someone to develop a way for users to access a shared directory or directories, and rooted devices can do it already.  Of course, rooting also unfortunately takes away the privacy of having individual accounts.

I agree with bird. Rooting seems to be the immediate fix, but as more users come across this conundrum, I'm sure development by third parties will focus on circumventing the simulated folder structure. Meaning that you will see apps on the play store in the near future that eliminate the issue.
