How do i turn off annoying sounds when having a chat conversation via text ?
The sound when the other person has sent a message. Really annoying to keep hearing it " pinging" each time.
Thanks ;)

It's probably a function of the chat software, but if you can't find a way to turn it off in the chat program function, just press and hold the volume down switch on your Nexus 7 to quiet or mute the sound.

Settings/Sound/Volume/Notifications ..down

Barry is correct.
I'm not the lowest of the low, but I am the slowest of the slow.

What chat application are you using? Talk?
Open the app, press the three dots in the top right of the screen. Select settings, select Google account and scroll down to Chat notification, Notification ringtone and select Silent. Now to Voice & video chat, Video chat ringtone and again select Silent.

As an alternative you can use AudioControl (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.matthew.rice.volume.master) from Google Play and create custom profiles for sound options. Admittedly I use it more on my phone to separate the ringer and notification volume controls.
