I'm on Google Play Icon. It says 'no video found' 'you can copy videos from your computer using a USB cable'...I was able to copy a jpg pic to somehwere..but when I try to copy a movie ( video_ts) folder, Windows explorer crashes and restarts. The USB connected Nexus shows the folders on the Nexus but no files.
PCs I can build from scratch but this is my first view of a tablet.

I make a folder for my movies and drag them in usb pc style. mp4 avi... Then use a third party player like MX or BSplayer to play them .

Install ES File explorer if you don't have it. I'm assuming you have a wifi network at home and your windows computer connected to that network either hardwired or wifi. Connect your your tablet to the network. Open ES File Explorer make sure your computer is setup for file sharing and is discoverable. Move any movie you want to transfer into it's own folder on the PC and make sure they are in the public folders on the pc. In ES on the very top left there is a litte button should say local with a little arrow on it. Click on it switch it to lan. Now in ES on the right side in the big buttons there is a + that says new click on it then click on scan. Your computer should show up add it and open it. You should see your folders navigate to your movie folders click hold until a menu comes up click copy to then choose your destination folder on your device. /SDcard/Movies if it's not there you can create it. Click paste and you are all set. May take a while to transfer depending on the size. You are going to want to have a third party player installed MXplaer and BSplayer free are very popular. BS is my favorite as it can paly mkv's and decode dts audio properly. Use the player to play your movie.
If you are rooted you may want to use a thumb drive to keep your movies on using stickmount and a usb cable you can mount and play your movies from there and change them easily whenever you like.
There is a known crash problems when transfering files over usb. I can't remember the fix off hand but I'm sure you can find it on the XDA forums.

You can play the movies from ES file explorer by clicking on the file and choosing which of the players you want. Bsplayer is great. Mxplayer supports .wtv files for windows media center recorded television. Vlc player will be coming to android soon, keep an eye out for it.
You can stream the movies directly from your computer or nas with ES file explorer without copying them to the nex7.
I've set up my laptop with a tuner to record tv in HD 1080p and it streams great to the nex7.

The key to the issue for the OP is that he was trying to copy "video_ts" so it is possible that it is a commercial DVD with copy protection. In any event I would suggest a DVD ripper and converting to AVI or MPEG-4. Although there are add-on programs that work with the DVD ripper to break the copy protection, I in no way advocating illegally copying DVD's.

Murky issue. Fair use would indicate backups are legal. Current law that breaking encryption is not.
Many people rip the dvds they own to put on a nas drive and not have to change discs or hunt them down. Check the codec supports for ts video or .vob file in players. Vlc should have it...whenever.
There are a number of dvds without encryption, Jeff Beck Live at Lonny's comes to mind. I've bought that one 4 times for gifts- got to support that philosophy. And the artist.

I would assume that besides the copyright protection, another format with compression would be more reasonable for storage.
I use the method of Es file explorer and browse my media server. On my home network, I can play a ripped blu-ray quite nicely.

I guess the law will be more draconian, seeing who has the money to bribe politicians into changing it. Someone needs to pick up a sword and start chopping off lizard parts.
What's a good compressed format to preserve menus and extra features? .mkv?

In my experience, the menus and features are removed when compressed. The raw videos contained are extracted.

The free app DVD Shrink 3.2 (google will find the DL) can suck down & compress or not compress all of the files present on a DVD disk, including the menu etc. I never used those files (just stripped out the actual movie) but I assume you could include them in the final ripped product.
I use freeware StaxRip to assemble the various files into the final container.

When you say app, is this a program that you use on the PC? I am old skool. When I think ripping, I think Plextor DVD drive and a PC. I vaguely remember a program that is outlawed now to backup the video ts and the audio files...ugh my brain hurts.

bjs229, app simply means application.
in this case I run the dvd backup software on my pc simply because of speed and application availability.
those programs are freeware for PC but might also have versions compiled for mac or android, never checked.
DVD shrink removes any copy protection and can also compress/resample files but does a poorer job of bundling all the pieces together into one playable file in the formats I want.
StaxRip compresses and bundles esp to a fixed output size regardless of movie length (great) but does not deal well with copy protection.
If you paid for software you might have better results but this combo works great for me.

I'm not admitting to anything specifically actionable. Member's info can be subpoenaed if they want to go after small fry. All posts are not sworn testimony and may be anecdotal or imaginary in nature. (Hiding under rock) read with a grain of salt. It wasn't me, someone else did it! (Behind someone slower)
I've heard of some people using rip it for me which ties a number of programs together and automates the process. They only use it for discs they already own for backup purposes only. Their intent is to keep from scratching up the dvds and is not meant to be illegal.
Vice versa? I am not Muhamet.
I prefer to poke at things with an extremely long stick behind a shield of anonymity. Should that veil drop and I would be seen as a stammering, unattractive, bipolar, poor fool then....oops.
