Title: Turning off 3G
Post by: olc on November 24, 2012, 03:46:28 PM
Is there some way to turn off the 3G and still be able to use wifi? I would like the assurance that I'm not wasting any of my limited 3G data plan where there is wifi. Airplane mode kills both 3G and wifi so that doesn't do it. I could just remove and replace the SIM card, but that's painful to do all the time. Is there no switch in settings to toggle 3G?

There are many apps POB there market that allow that functionality. I have 4gLte so I don't know exactly what will work for the 3g HSPA+ with the N7. I do know that there are apps out there that will do exactly what you're looking for. Search Google Play and let us know what you find.

MoreQuicklyPanel or SettingsExtended. I believe they are both free. I use Settings on my phone and More on my N7.

Thanks to both of you. I have found several widgets that will do it. I asked the question because Google tech support said there was no way. I think the device side of Google needs a lot of work.

I'd be surprised if the stock Power control widget didn't allow this?

Open app tray, select widgets and find the "Power control" widget.

I am stunned to hear that you don't have the ability to run straight WiFi right out of the box. If true, That sounds like an irresponsible design. I could be wrong but I still think there has got to be a way without pulling the card or having to use a third party app.

Are you guys saying I can't use wifi w the nexus 7 32mb? I cared mostly for the memory.. Ill send it back.
I want wifi for home and 3G or whatever AT&T is offering for away from home.
My wifi is strong as hell and no way would i find a SIM card sufficient.
Please let me know...
I read it has wifi so I'm confused

Basically if I don't put in a SIM card it should work... On wifi.
iPad w 3G capabilities allow wifi so why not the nexus?

Hi NJ. I love the NJ  shore myself! Avalon,  AC.
I don't own a Nexus with 3G but I know it has Wi-Fi capability. It has been a while since we discussed this but have you not tried to use Wi-Fi yet? Have you tried going into settings and wireless connections at the top? Can you try and sign on to a Wi-Fi account and see what happens when you travel in and out of range. I am hoping that the 3G automatically gives in to a known Wi-Fi connection.
Important!  Please try the power control widget that jayj mentioned.  It is built in to your device.  You should be able to toggle Wi-Fi and 3G off and on I would think.
Happy Holidays

You don't need to turn 3G off for Wi-Fi to connect, it should connect automatically when within distance of a connected router.
I too don't have a 3G Nexus 7 but have owned and do own several Android phones, can't see it being any different.

If you really want to be sure that 3G is turned off, install a widget from Google Play or just go to...

Settings> More> Mobile networks> untick Data enabled.

Personally, I have a fondness for Boston especially Boylston St. As for the HSPA + model, which I do not have, but I would suspect that the WiFi connection would override the 3g much as it does on your Android phone. If you are concerned about it, there are many apps available at Google Play that track data usage separating WiFi and 3g. Google support is probably correct in that you cannot turn off 3g, but if WiFi overrides it, then it would not be necessary.

Can anybody with a 3G N7 confirm whether 3G can be turned off?
I'm not convinced it can't be and I'm also not convinced Google customer service know what they are taking about!

The problem isn't that it can't be turned off. The problem is it turns itself on again for no apparent reason. It appears to be a common issue for many users.
