Been trying to use my n7 as my primary call and text device. I don't mind the size and I rarely make or receive calls anymore anyhow. My phone is a 3GS Jailbroken 4.2.

Trying how? Have you tried or are you just thinking about the possibility? I dont have an iphone anymore but maybe Google Voice and then an app like Groove IP?

I thought that bluetooth tether still uses the phones data plan.

My t-mobile 3GS will not connect via blue tooth (Nexus 7 is not recognized.) and I was under the impression this was a normal issue with the proprietary iphone phones. I was just hoping for a solution via blue tooth to connect the two so I could send/rx texts. Thanks for the advice the two apps work great for sending calls on n7!!

There's a great app for doing this Tablet Talk. I already checked and unfortunately for you it's not available for I devices.
Works great for my N7 connected to my Atrix 2 over by for exactly the purposes you are looking for.

Glad that Groove IP and GV work for you. You can use Google Voice to send your texts. That is what I use.
I think there is a way to BT tether your phone and use as a hotspot using certain apps but I don't have iTunes so you will need to do a search.
Edit. It seems that MiWi 5.5 can be used by your phone for hotspot.

this topic scared the hell out of me at the beginning, then i tried and thank god everything works just fine for me.
as long as google voice works and that i can use my old iphone 3g(jailbroken & unlocked) as an hotspot(trough blutooth) i'm ok. basically fastweb is gifting me a sim card with 1gb per month for free, and i'm willing to use it as my tablet 3g plan.
so erschek@gmail.com i suggest you to use your cellphone as an hotspot too, it's the easiest way to do what you wanna do.( of course if you have an internet plan on your phone)
p.s
i don't use the internet plan i have on my galaxy cause internet plans in italy aren't unlimited(i have 100MB of data per day) :(
