Title: Mame
Post by: bjs229 on December 01, 2012, 01:14:04 AM
Finally got my Mame emulator app up and running. I was having problems a while back and decided to give it another shot. It works great if you find the right ROM. I found a site with a bunch of free ROMs. I used to love playing these games at the arcade when I was a kid. Defender ,Dig dug, Asteroids, Pac Man, Mr Do. etc..
If anyone is interested in the site for the ROMs let me know.
The emulator is free in GP. MAME4ALL(http://img.tapatalk.com/d/12/12/01/u8uza5a9.jpg)Now I just need to find one of those little video game cabinets that will fit a Nexus.

That's awesome.  I used to use MAME on my pc for all those games.  Glad to see it running on the Nexus 7.

8 bit Atari games?

Do you have to use the on screen controls? I remember seeing a huge usb arcade controller at Fry's. Make a nexus mount, maybe a fresnel lens. Wait, I've got an Atari in the attic! And a 75 baud modem! I wonder if my bulletin board subscription lapsed. Ymodem rules! Old people drool.

Yeah Matt. On screen control isn't meant for these games. Unfortunately ,I don't have a joystick and one of those little arcade cabinets that are starting to come out for android looks incredible! If anyone has a way of getting a stick to work I would love to know how.

Loocid, not sure of the bits. I think higher. They are the actual ROMs from the quarter arcade games back in the 80s.

I installed like 50 games so far. Its funny cause the ROMs are abbreviated so you don't know exactly what you are getting sometimes . I start em up and am  like Damn! I spent a years allowance on that one!

Moon Patrol, Zaxxon, all the Donkey Kongs , Gorf, Galaxians, Space Invaders, all the Pac man games and Ms of course. It's phenomenal. Video games and pinball were my escapes as a kid.

You could build your own with an android tv device, a lcd monitor with hdmi, and...

Arcade controllers.

If your going for a miniature, 4.2.1 added some gamepad hid support. You might need an app to remap the buttons, not sure which pads will work.

4.2.1 changelog.

The bluetooth stack seems to have been changed from bluez to newer. But theres a problem with blue tooth and wifi at the same time. I hate using the usb, but I'll hunt down an adapter and try an old gamepad.

That's the thing..so mqny clouds with WiFi and BT right now that I can't spend anymore time trying to get another project working. I just like having the ROMs and even as a novelty a way to play them handicapped on the Nexus.

This would be a really cool project. A Mame cabinet for the Nexus 7 or 10. I was thinking of some sort of clip system that can spread to hold bigger or smaller devices.

I started with Pong. Remember Joust? My dad worked for TI and I got the early calculators, but my teachers still made me use a slide rule. I saw a slide rule app! I miss being young and invincible. These whippersnappers today with their boomboxes and their interweb have it too easy, I remember....

Vs. 3 mile island. Wait, the running back is recovered, but the front line can't open holes or protect qb.
It's a wash. I miss the old days, batteries and all.

I lived in Jersey when 3 Mile happened. Maybe that's why my brain is fried. Yeah Shady is back but our O line is brutal. Everyone is getting fired in 5 weeks.

I used to play on the BBS ring too. I had a super fast 14.4 modem and a screen that had a button that enabled a third color. If only that tractor paper mess didn't clutter the desk, I might have put my Atari in the attic sooner. Actually, its still there with a few dozen games.

I used to hide a 5-1/5 floppy under my bed. It had a copy of strip poker on it that ran in DOS. When the tri-color screen used red, you knew the text meant something sexy.

I think the first computer porn I was exposed to was programmed in Basic on a dumb terminal at school. It was printed on paper, no displays back then and you had to squint at the ASCII characters to pretend to see anything.

I got my old Logitech dual action gamepad to work natively under new 4.2.1 hid support by disabling wiimote ime  and virtual overlay gamepad. The adapter was from a USB kB case. Buttons mapped with turbodosbox config, should be a mame config too. Game on! The pad seems to toggle through the launcher ui as well. Now to find an adapter for the old style dsub joysticks to USB.

YModem? Kermit! And I think the 75 baud modem might be a current loop TTY interface. Hey, I learned to type on an IBM model 026 keypunch. How many people can say that on this forum?

And just to make me seem older... Yes, I worked on paper tape punches back in the day.

All right, you win. Until someone claims punch cards, ENIAC, or one of Pascal's machines.

8" floppy disks on a DEC VAX PDP 11-750, preceded by keypunching IBM 80 column punch cards, and helping my dad build a Sphere computer (variant of the Altair 880). I ran a BBS on a TRS-80 Model I, on a program I typed myself in BASIC, in the days of 300 baud modems and Xmodem.  I ran it on 3 X 80 k FDDs.  Two were originally 40k, 40 track DSSD FDDs that I added double density kits to, and the third was an 80k, 80 track SSDD FDD.  I made them all readable by patching NEWDOS.

So what do we have to do? There's no MAME4ALL.  That's iOS. We're supposed to download MAME4droid, or MAME4droid reloaded, or both?  If we flash an Atari ROM, won't that overwrite the MAME/Android OS?  Where's the link to the game ROMs?  Why didn't you just post the info in your first post, Barry?

A new winner! I think the roms are warez. Turbodosbox, however, has plenty of abandonware. Another thread.

The joystick is cool, I'm scrolling through the homescreens and running android apps by hitting the button remapped to enter. It's a matter of perspective, if I make a head clamp for the nexus, it will be much larger than the 42 inch hdtv across the room. Then a custom rom with otg + charging and a usb hub for pad, kb and audio dac for surround sound also attached to my head......no.

MAME4DROID! My bad. I wasn't sure if linking to other download sites was cool or not. Plus after all this computer geek jargon I still get to be involved in the thread. Hopefully one of you geniuses can get me rolling with a joystick setup. Lol http://www.theoldcomputer.com/roms/index.php?folder=MAME%2FMame-0.37b5 (http://www.theoldcomputer.com/roms/index.php?folder=MAME%2FMame-0.37b5) I use the Mame4droid app at the Google store but it says Mame4All when it opens.

By the way, gotta be 37b5 and some of the ROMs don't work.  It is kind of a trial and error thing. The ones that are rated usually work but sometimes you need to search for THAT special game you used to blow your quarters on.
I had no idea that there would be this much interest! I'm glad. Let me know how it is going guys.

On jb 4.2.1:

Step 1. Buy a joystick.
Step 2. Plug it in.

Worked for me, anyway.
The xbox for pc joystick seems to be popular.

On earlier roms an app like sixaxis or usb/bt joystick center may be needed.

Joysticks on the nexus are not in my repertoire. Know pretty much zero except for what I have read. Lately it seems there have been some problems with connections.
I was hoping to go wireless. I have too many fish to fry right now.

Hey bj
I downloaded the mame app when I first got my nexus but only ever had success with the game track and field. Having read your posts I'm going to go back and give it a go!
I use nes, snes, n64, sega master system and mega drive emulators on the nexus with a ps3 controller and they work great.
I love playing all the old games.

Hey Paulo! I used to love that game Track and Field! I remember my fingers hurting from playing it for hours at the arcade. I have to go back and find that one. The ROMs have names that can be sometimes hard to know what game is what. I usually just download a bunch at random and see what works and what doesn't. It takes a little playing around.
PS3 controller that is wireless right?

I bought a Moga controller. It has a clip to hold a phone but it works fine for the Nexus. I had to download a driver off of xda to get it to work with Mame. It has it's own app Moga pivot where you can buy games but I dumped it cause it was shutting down my Wi-Fi. Bluetooth seems to be working fine except for a little bit of a sound delay to the speaker. Pretty cool little controller. You can put it in a loose pocket.
