Especially since I can't find any sign of the Nexus 7 having GPS capabilities?
-
It works with Google maps that way doesn't it?
-
Because it has gps. (http://nexus7forum.com/nexus-7-general-discussion/list-of-nexus-7-features/msg3300/#msg3300)

Give GPSTest s try from Google Play, you could be surprised at the GPS capabilities of the Nexus 7.

Google Maps, Google Earth, Google NAVIGATION. I thought if you try any of those apps they ask permission to start gps if it hasn't been.. Anyway, check Settings /Personal/Location Access / Voila.
By the way, how did you know about the antenna but then assume no GPS?

I bought my Nexus 32gb at Tesco last Friday.
The GPS is amazing, better than my other GPS devices.
It is lying on my desk, 6 ft from a small window and it got an accurate fix in 14 Seconds using GPS Status a free App.
It is now showing receipt of signal from 10 satelites.
As well as Google Maps, I downloaded a free app Nav Free, which has accurate UK maps and I used it coming back from Stansted with it lying on the passenger seat and it worked great with clear instructions.
Overall I am very impressed with my Nexus 7 so far.

My bad I guess, I assumed the google maps got its fix from the IP address being used. I haven't used it outside except to read books.
I found out about the GPS antenna when I popped off the back cover for an ongoing battery problem I'm having, and saw the three antennas mounted inside of it.
