Hey!
My name's Mel. I've ordered my Nexus 7 but there's a huge delay... so I went ahead and joined the forum in anticipation! :P
Can't wait to finally get my hands on my Nexus and join in all the fun. ;D

Welcome to the forum Mel. With the US off the shelf availability in Walmart, Staples, and other retailers, a delay surprises me. Where did you order your Nexus 7?

I ordered mine from the Australian-based online store "Kogan" because they were able to beat Google's official price.
Usually they're actually pretty good, I ordered my Galaxy Note from them and had it within the week.

The current delivery date for my Nexus is the 15th.

We're glad to have you. Stop by periodically and read up on some topics that may interest you regarding your Nexus experience. I would recommend reading up on rooting and make a decision whether or not you would like to when your device arrives on the 15th. There are many advantages depending on what you intend to use your Nexus for. What are your primary intentions as far as functionality?

I was thinking about rooting. I bought my Nexus to basically be my computer away from home. So mostly writing, gaming, web browsing and stuff. :)

I don't see the big. Red to root. Yes you can do more and people that root don't bother me but I haven't found the overwhelming need to do of.

@ popdevil
You are correct there is no overwhelming need to root your Nexus 7, as it will function fine without rooting. Those of us who elect to root do so because we enjoy the advantages that rooting offers.

I only rooted my G Note for the novelty of it, and to enjoy Jellybean before I was meant to...
So I'll probably leave my N7, at least for a while. You know how gadgets become less delicate the older they get... :P
-
@Popdevil No one is forcing you to root, it's personal choice...

Why is rooting such a polarized subject? Sometimes I feel like people that slam it don't really understand what they are slamming.

I agree Barry. There's no harm in rooting. Its what rooting allows that can potentially harm your device. Like guns don't kill, people do.

WOW!
I love it!! This little machine is incredible, I can't believe it was so cheap! It's so smooth, and the screen is AWESOME! (And that's saying a lot coming from a Galaxy Note owner)
It was definitely worth the wait.
In case anyone is interested, I've found that Thumb Keyboard 4 is the best tablet keyboard ever and works like a charm on the N7.
Hehehehehe I will be getting NO sleep tonight!! :D
-
Are you a former user of swype? Have you tried the gesture keyboard that is native to the device?
Glad that you are so pleased with the Nexus. I honestly wish every owner expressed the same excitement! This little thing is wonderful.

Fear of rooting is fear of the unknown, IMHO.
I'm not the lowest of the low, but I am the slowest of the slow. 49.6 mpg avg for 38k miles in non-hybrid Scion xB

I think that many people don't root because they have heard the horror stories about bricked equipment. Personally, I haven't rooted my N7 because I have no need to. I've rooted all my android phones out of the box. Bottom line is what Jay said, personal choice.
