I've just got my nexus7 3g, and have unlimited messages. The messages come through from my phone number that was given to the Nexus 7 but I can't tap on it and answer the message I can just read it. where can I get the little small square :-) app for messages ?
my tablets that are linked , and bought from my provider have the messages app already installed. This one is unlocked, but not associated with any provider. It was worth the wait to get the Sim card ! This is the only thing that is missing!
Any help is appreciated!
Provider is Telus, I'm in BC, Canada.
Nexus7C, 3G, 32G

Apps like Chomp SMS, Go SMS or Handcent may work but I have a Wi-Fi only N7 so I'm unsure...

If you have not received your Sim card, then I am assuming that you are currently working on wifi, therefore SMS which is a service from your 3g provider, will not function correctly without the Sim card.

Sorry, I thought I made that clear... I have the Sim card, phone#, plan and unlimited messaging organized, the messages come through with simple messaging app, but I can only read messages, not reply or originate them. The messages show up top left notification, I can tap on it and read, but choice is only done, not reply or anything, and then it disappears.
The android phones have the full messaging app with the green square smiley face, and the tablets my provider sells have it installed too, but its missing with the nexus7.
I haven't had any luck finding the app on line.
Again, really appreciate any insight, and pointers.

What other tablets do you have? Did you try Handscent SMS?

I have Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 4G, and SG Tab 8.9 lte, both are great, but I'm finding that I really like the size of the Nexus7! I waited for the 3G version.

I checked out Handcent on Google play, and it said that none of my tablets are compatible with with the the program, only my HTC Desire HD phone. :(
Any other suggestions that might work with tablets?

There is a method that allows SMS via the Google talk app. Does anyone use this method? I was looking into this there other day and never figured it out.

I use Google Voice to send and recieve my text messages on the Nexus.

Since SMS is a service included in your 3G package from the provider that supplies your data plan and Sim card, I would check with them to determine why your out going text messages fail.

how exactly would you go about initiating a new text message with Google voice?

Loocid. I have a Google Voice phone number . I use the Google voice app on the Nexus. The UI is setup just like a text message app. I just send and receive messages and voicemail normally.

BTW, I use Groove IP in conjunction with GV to make and receive phone calls.

Now I have no problem answering any SMS with my tablet phone #. I tried Tablet Talk, but it wanted me to sync with my ce

I tried tablet talk as well. That was how I ended up with this setup. I am cool now but I want to check out the app you just mentioned Murphy.

Look up google voice..
There's an app also called "text now"
I haven't got it yet but I will find it lol
Ask your provider is my guess.
If I'm paying for something I would ask.

:D For me, GO SMS Pro - Works like a dream!! I tried it out today while I was waiting in my Dr's office for 2 hrs ::), and was reading and letting my family know how late I was etc. and their messages popped up on top of my book, I could reply to it without leaving my page, it was unobtrusive, and the best of all.... FREE!!
So I've found my solution... this one is the best for me.

Hi I'm from the Philippines and I got my Nexus 7 from Kuala Lumpur. I rooted it (fastboot - CWM and su.zip) then installed the sms native app to send and receive sms messages.
Here is the link to XDA for the sms apk file. Use CWM to install it on a rooted stock Nexus 7.
