Title: Usb port question
Post by: JAD82 on December 17, 2012, 12:38:53 AM
I searched and couldn't find an answer to this. Is there a way I can I use the usb port for charging and down loading at the same time. Thx

When the cord is attached to the PC I believe it is charging. Slowly, but charging. Is that what you are asking? Or are you thinking of a split power cord and USB data flow ?

That's it a split power cord and USB data flow cord if there is such a thing. I noticed on the kindle fire HD it has 2 USB ports. I'm not sure if they have certain uses.

If you do NOT root, you can not charge and do data transfer at the same time on the Nexus 7.

If you DO root, there is a modification that can be added that has been reported to allow data xfer and charging at the same time with a special cable (i doubt the cable is required per se).

I really don't see a need for that myself.  The battery on my Nexus last for hrs.. what are you downloading Moby Dick?

The folks building their own Pogo pin docks report that you can NOT use the microUSB port when charging.  No idea if this is different with the official dock  but we will find out soon enuf.

Yeah, it's a nogo at this time. There are custom roms that allow otg + charging so it could be implemented in a future update. The powered hubs don't send voltage down the host cable.

I use a nas drive to stream media over wifi, it works while charging. If your router has a usb port, try plugging a flash or hard drive in it. Then use a file explorer to stream or copy. Or from another computer on the same wifi set to share folders with the network.

Your widrive is portable battery powered. Pogo will keep from straining the usb jack. Should see it soon, but for 50$ they better include the charger.
My uverse router doesn't have usb, check yours. An ethernet hard drive box would be cool, but would need some file server rom.

according to early adopters of the official dock at XDA, not only does it NOT include a charger adapter, it does NOT come with a USB cable.  Who knows what it will include in the US version.

Comments expressing disgust followed ......LOL

I was using the Nexus Media Importer (google play) to download video (3gp) from my Android 2.3 phone and my Nexus 7 was charging the phone.

What cable were you using and how was charging indicated while a file transfer over the same port was happening ?

I've done the same thing with my RAZR. Plugged the charging cable through OTG.

ya, but did you stream files from a Flash Memory device at the same time on the N7.

My testing shows at the very least, when you apply 2.1 A charge to a OTG connected hub with a USB drive, the charging light does not light and the N7 does not say it is charging.

MicoUSB to USB from the phone into  female USB to MicroUSB into the Nexus 7.
I copied a 3gp video from the phone and before I disconnected noticed the battery symbol indicated the phone was charging.

Ah, yeah, the N7 was supplying the power to the phone ... not all microUSB connections are as peculiar as that on the N7.

Some folks report N7 charging requires shorting the data pins on the cable / charger, others says a particular resistor is all that is required.  Some say that there is charging but that the shorting is required for the "Charging" indicator to display on the N7.  Some say slow 'USB' type charging via a split cable is doable, others say the code allowing it must be included (root required).  All in all, a thoroughly confused situation.

My pitiful experiments using a powered hub, etc, show that if a OTG cable is used, you can not charge and if a OTG cable is NOT used, charging works but you can not transfer data.
