Hi Merry Christmas everyone. Just bought the 32gb Nexus 7 for the wife but cannot connect to WiFi. When switching on we get the welcome screen, select english language then comes up with SELECT WiFi (we have BT)
Gives 3 options
1. BThomehub2 authenticating
2. BTWiFi
3. BTWiFi with FON
System just hangs. Tried reset but still the same. Hub is working fine with laptop and phone so is something we are not doing or is it back to shop time
Thanks in anticipation

Merry Xmas and welcome.
Do you mean bluetooth?
If so, Have you tried the app PDA tablet? I use that to tether with my cell phone.

No its not a bluetooth problem we cannot connect with internet via our hub when selecting it.
I assume you need to connect to internet first before you can do anything. We got a "quick start guide" in the package that doesn't tell you much :(

BTWiFi is a WiFi hotspot service in the UK, and I am not familiar with it, so we need to let some of our UK members take the lead on this one.

You need to find YOUR wifi name and select it. You may also want to turn the nexus 7 off and turn your router off. Turn both back on and see what happens.

What frequency is your router broadcasting, the N7 is only compatible with 2.4Ghz...

Hi Toulky
I got a Nexus 7 from my wife yesterday for Chrimble and I have exactly the same problem. >:(
Hence why I joined this forum.
I can connect to my BT Home Hub 3 OK with my iPod, our iPhones, our laptops, my desktop so the problem is not at the HH end.
When I start I see a list of available Wi-Fi access points including my HH as you do.
The access points that have something like BTWiFi or BTWiFi-with-FON in the name are the FON access points which do not have authentication. To use these you need the BT app which you can't download until you are up and running.
The access points that have BTHomeHub or BTHub in the name are the primary access points, looks like BThomehub2 is your own router. This is the one you need use by selecting it. You need to authenticate to use these - enter your WEP or WPA key (password) when prompted.
I assume you did this as mine also says "Authenticating..." when trying to connect.
Mine tries several times then gives up - grrrrrrr!!! >:(
Sorry I don't have the solution yet but it's sort of good to know I am not alone.
I am on the BT help forum too - I will post there and see if anyone else has had the same problem.
I'll get back here if I find the answer.
Regards
Don

I am not at all familiar with the BT hotspots, but I did see the BT App on Google Play Store for attaching to a BT hotspot, so why not take your Nexus 7 to a public hotspot or a friend's location or even tether to your phone and download the BT App?

Hi Don yes we have got the same problem cannot believe it is my hub as computers and phone pick up WiFi perfectly.
My primary is BTHomehub2 plus the BTWifi with FON and BTWiFi if I select them it indicates I am connected but if try to go online it comes back connection error
Have tried to tether via phone which comes up connected with good signal but again when I try to go online comes up "no connection try again"
It will be going back to PC World tomorrow very disappointing.

You are returning the Nexus because of a router hub issue? I think Prime had a good idea. Sign on public and download the BT app.

I'm not familiar with the BT router, but when attempting to connect do you get a browser webpage to log into? If so, this may be the android domain name resolution bug.
Try using WPS option in settings/wifi/menu. You'll need to enter the wps pin from another device into the router's configuration typically found as an ip address in the browser. Hopefully, this will bypass the android's browser setup.
Also try to get the BT app and wifi connection manager app from another hotspot or sideload.
WPS= wifi protected setup
BT= British Telecom, or BlueTooth?

I did a little research and this is what I came up with (No guarantees though):
Go to Settings - Tap on Wi-Fi - Delete any networks referencing your BT connection - Tap the "+" at top right
For SSID enter the name of the Hub printed on the back of it
Tap the dropdown key beside security and select "WPA"- Enter the wireless key on the back of the hub
Enter the Password for your Hub if requested
If it worked, you should show connected.
Note:
BThomehub is your local connection or private connection
BTWiFi or BTWiFi with FON are the Public WiFi or the part of your network that you are sharing to create a public network in the UK.

S.Prime, matt thanks for the suggestions but please remember the problem we are having is in the initial set up so we cannot even get to Settings to try any of the suggestions that involve 'go to settings'. Until the initial set up is complete we cannot do ANYTHING on the Nexus.
BT is indeed British Telecom - the main UK Broadband provider.
Anyways toulky, my Nexus is now up and running and all is well.
The solution?
Well it's very embarrassing really, I was using the wrong WiFi WPA Key (password). ::)
How did I find out?
I went to the Settings on the Home Hub and checked out what the key was set to.
As S.Prime says it's also on the label on the bottom of the Home Hub - as long as you haven't changed it from the default.
I then remembered I went from WEP to WPA when I upgraded from Home Hub version 1 to version 3. I obviously didn't change the key in my password database - d'oh! :o
Hope yours is such as simple a solution.
Thanks for all the suggestions Guys and apologies for my stupidity, or my memory module failure anyway. Hehe!
If only the error message had been more meaningful such as "Incorrect username or password" instead of the totally misleading "Authenticating..." :P
-
As a note, you can skip the WiFi configuration in the initial setup and set it up later, sorry I missed that you were still in the initial setup.

Glad that you got it sorted out. No embarasment here. We've all done it at one point or another. Hope you stick around as part of the family.

If I never screwed up, I wouldn't learn anything. Happy Boxing Day!
-
Couldn't agree more matt, after spending 30 years or more in the IT industry I have learned that just following instructions has never taught me anything, I have only learned stuff when things don't work. ;D
I certainly will be sticking around in the future loociddreemr...
That's All Folks

Glad you got it worked out! Bad key.. happens to the best of us.

As I say toulky, to connect to the Public access hotspots on your router you need the BT WiFi app available from the Market Place.
As a note, you can skip the WiFi configuration in the initial setup and set it up later [SNIP]
oooh, that's interesting S.P - how do you do that?

Ooh shucks :-[ I was doing the same ie using the wrong password from the card that came with the hub. I was inputting the admin password code instead of the wireless key code
Put in correct code hey presto up and running. Glad I came on here and read your message before I took it back to PC World. Would have been tad embarrassing to say the least. The fact that it asked for password instead of wireless key threw me
Thanks to everyone for their input hope the wife enjoys her new toy (I might have a go on it once in a while) :D

Excellent toulky, glad to hear you're up and running.
If you sneak a go on the Nexus you won't be disappointed. ;D

Hi guys, I just got my Nexus 7 for Christmas and I just joined the forum, so posting for the first time. With mine I've had no problem connecting to the internet WIFI at home or on friends routers. My problem is at coffee shops, I can connect and show a strong signal but when I open Chrome looking for the Terms and Conditions so I can accept and surf all I get is a message that it is not connected to the internet.
The only way I've been able to connect when this happens is to open with the Play Store app, the touch the 3 stack of square blocks in the upper right corner then select help which then takes me to the Terms and Conditions page that I should be getting when I attempt to open Chrome. So something must be set wrong or ?? It's my first tablet so pretty new at this stuff, so go easy on me.

Keep us updated and someone should be able to help but I probably won't be able to. Whenever anyone I know has WiFi problems I just rip out there whole network and put a new one in.
