I got mine for Christmas too. I don't want to root it until warranty is up, but sure am thinking about it. Hoping to learn more about Android too.

Welcome darv. Rooting is optional. Android Jelly Bean and the N7 is great either way. All of my other Android devices have been rooted shortly after opening the box. I haven't had a need to root my N7 and still haven't decided if I will or not.

Welcome. IMHO, the whole unlock root warranty thing is blown out of proportion. If you decide to root, in most cases you can go back to stock just as easy. The hardest part is sending it back.

Welcome to the forum.
I wouldn't let the warranty stop you from rooting. The same tools that unlock the bootloader and root the device can also reverse the procedure to restore the device to an out of the box condition that cannot be distinguished from a previously rooted device. In short, they wont be able to tell.

Welcome to the forum darv. I root by choice, but I will have to admit, that the Nexus 7 can be tolerated without root.

Couldn't you just dl and Flash the rom ? And unroot with an app?
Actually it's the relocking.. that I don't know how to do without the

Relocking is the easiest…just use fastboot commands from a CMD window.
fastboot oem lock
If the USB port is broken, just let the battery die. No way to charge, no way to verify that it's modified or not.
