Title: Download help
Post by: robg on January 01, 2013, 09:27:39 AM
Hi all
My first question, so please be gentle. Wife bought me a Nexus 7 for xmas, and so far has been great. I've had an android phone for a while, so I am used to the OS.
But I have a problem that I just cant seem to resolve. I have been trying to download some MP4 movie files, when I press the link to download I get a pop-up to ask how I wish to complete the action (chrome/MX player/VLC) so all that happens is the file starts to stream/play and not download.
Same sites on my phone download OK. What am I doing wrong?

Welcome to the forums.
I am not sure if I am following what you mean by downloading movies. It sounds like you are streaming ... In any event .. I hope I misunderstood but downloading movies is not condoned by the forum. It is illegal.

Unless of course, it is downloaded from a legal source, such as Google Play or Amazon etc.

Its MP4 clips from a legitimate "adult" site.  So nothing illegal.

I would suggest that you download the videos to your PC and then transfer them to the Nexus 7 with the USB cable.

I would expect then to stream if you select MX Player or VLC buy do they even stream if you select Chrome?

You could try an alternative browser like Boat, Firefox or xScope...

I get the same results with Xscope and Chrome.

Dorothy .. Why didn't you say so.. Nothing wrong with a little adult entertainment:P. .... Now I know what you mean.  On the PC you can right click and save..on here it just plays..I remember somehow saving little files like that. I think if I held my finger on the vid it gave me options.
Talk about a gift that keeps on giving.. Thumbs up!

Try long pressing the file . You should see a box pop up , then select save link the file should download if it is a downloadable file .

Thanks for all the ideas, but all tried prior to registering here and failed. Have tried Firefox browser and same happens, and the long press does give some options, and save link is one, but saves the original html page and not the target file?
What really bugs me, and I did mention it in the original post, is my phone will do it no problem at all, and thats running 4.0 while the tablet runs 4.2.1.  So i'm guessing its an OS problem rather than browser.

Here is a test download link, that I have tested with Chrome. http://camendesign.com/code/video_for_everybody/test.html (http://camendesign.com/code/video_for_everybody/test.html) Open the Web page and long press on the link that says download "MP4" and tap save link and you will see an downward pointing arrow in the top notification bar and a final download complete notification. Your file will be found in /sdcard0/downloads.

First : sorry for my bad english for I'm french.
You should try to install any download plugin from your store ( just search for downloader or mp4 downloader) and when you'll click on a link choose this app instead of a player. It will do the trick.

Thanks for that link S.Prime.  I found somewhere else as well to try test downloads as well as that one you posted. And guess what...worked fine, downloaded perfectly.
And Patrick, thanks for your idea, I wasn't even aware that you could get something like that. I tried 2 from Play store and both of them failed to do what I wanted them to do. May try some more.
My only conclusion is that its some issue or non interaction with the web sites in question, they don't like me viewing with a tablet, mobile fine. Tablet no.
I will keep experimenting...........
