Guys,
Got a Nexus 7 for Christmas, read that with an adapter other USB devices can be connected so bought a USB OTG adapter, apparently the OTG stands for On The Go and allows device to act as a master or slave.
Attached a USB flash drive, flashes but nothing shows; anyone else used this type of adapter.

You have to be rooted in order to read/write to/from a flash drive. There is a Nexus Media Importer app that lets you read data from a flash drive with an unrooted Nexus 7, but it doesn't have the ability to write to flash drives until you are rooted.

Perhaps we should mention that along with "Root" you would need the app, StickMount from the Google Play Store to have R/W ability with an OTG adapter.

If you do NOT want to root your N7 at this point, you can also have read-only access to media files on a usbdrive with and thru the app Nexus Media Importer.

You can use the starter app Nexus Photo Viewer to get an idea how NMI works without having to pay at first.
Let me know if you want more details about how NMI works - it is not even close to as useful as stickmount w root, but there it is...

The Nexus can be a bit finicky with what OTG cable works. Hopefully you have one that is compatible .

Thanks guys for replies.
Read up a bit more about rooting but at the moment it seems I can get virtually the same effect using the network. ES file browser permits browsing networked files.
Bit reluctant to void the warranty as yet.

A totally stupid question I know, but.....
What are the benefits of Rooting your N7? Does it void the warranty is you do this? Should I know anything in particular about the Rooting process?

I believe it's the unlocking that voids the warranty not the rooting which is performed after. In most. Cases, with Primes tutorial you can be back to factory stock in a matter of minutes. No harm, no foul. Nobody will ever know. I haven't heard of any cases of Nexus 7 people being denied service for being rooted. Not saying it hasn't happened.

I read around the end of Oct that it was made illegal. Tablets but not phones for some odd reason. The whole thing seems ridiculous.

From what I recall, it was pertaining to unlocking them for use with another carrier, or bypassing DRM. The term "tablet" was to vague to assign a legal definition, hence the confusion on the matter.

That is correct, unlocking the bootloader is what viods the warranty.
Actually, rooting a tablet is illegal.
Rooting is not illegal, SIM unlocking is though without carrier authorization under US law.
