A recent article on Gizmodo on this subject has convinced me to switch from my aging LG G2x on my off contract T-mobile plan to my Nexus 7 32gb wifi using a Hotspot on Virgin Mobile/Sprint. I was wondering what the best way of setting up Google Voice on my nexus is. Should I port my T-mo number to Google Voice?

Abhor us the article. Link.

Google voice will issue you a number. You can even chose from available numbers if you want to have a personalized number. You can also choose to use your own number. I don't think that a port is necessary unless you are shutting off service to that number.

Here's that Gizmodo article, although the author has a nexus with 3g My usage will be similar to his. I have GrooveIP and Google Voice installed already. I'm planning on porting my number as my Nexus will be my "phone". Is there anything keeping me from Using only Google Voice?

I don't know how to use Google Voice alone to make calls on the Nexus. That's why I use it in conjunction with GIP.

So can you receive calls on Google Voice for nexus 7? Also, are most new Bluetooth headsets compatible?
-
Maybe I am missing something but the Google Voice app doesn't give me phone on the nexus but will dial the number for use on my cell phone. I am fine with my setup with GIP but now I feel I need to research GV a little more.
Bluetooth headsets can be hit or miss. I suggest doing a search. There is plenty of info on just that subject.

OK, well thanks for all the help guys. I'll let you know how it goes in a few weeks.

I've got the same thing Barry. Google voice will not dial independently for me either.
