Title: Unable to open files in Kingsoft Office
Post by: anken32 on January 10, 2013, 11:58:06 PM
Hi, I have loaded some files with the" .doc" extension into Kingsoft Office. They show up there in the File Explorer and are visible in the app.
When I try to open the files, they show only symbols.
I have it set to Office and Text Files. It shows that the .doc files are compatible.
I just don't know what I'm doing wrong....Can anybody help?  Thanks in advance.

Sounds like either your document or your app is corrupted.  Try opening the document in Word on your PC.  If that works, try uninstalling and reinstalling Kingsoft Office.

Thank you for your suggestion.
I deleted and added the files again but with the same result.
I'm using "Open Office" Word Processor on my laptop and the files have the ".odt" extension.  Have changed the extension to ".doc"  Those files  open fine on my laptop and on the N7 when it's connected with the USB Cable.
Have tried to open those files unconnected with Kingsoft and File Explorer.  I get the message "Text Encoding Windows 1252" (??) . When I tap ok, they open with unreadable symbols & letters.
Do you and anybody have any other ideas?

Open the files in Open Office on your pc and chose "Save As" and select Word/.doc and transfer those to the Nexus 7 and see if that works.

Finally, I had a chance to get back to my problem.  Thank you for your suggestion, S.Prime.
When I open any Open Office Doc.  and click on "save as" my best choice available at that time is "MS Word 97/2000/XP"  .doc.  My laptop has Win7 64bit.
The next message I get is: This document may contain content that cannot be saved in Ms.Word....file format. Save it anyway?....Yes...
Then...."Use the latest ODF file format and be sure all formatting and content is saved correctly"    I think that this might be my problem, but I don't know how to fix it...
Files open well on laptop and on N7 when connected via USB.  Trying to open those files on N7 when disconnected, I get messages like "File does not exist or can't be opened".
Somewhere I read that I might need to transfer those files to cloud first. So, I installed  Dropbox and moved them there and then transfer but still have the same problem.
I hope that I didn't ramble on too long, but I just can't figure out how to enter those files into Kingsoft or any other app. on my Nexus.
So, if you have any other ideas, I will appreciate it very, very much.

open office does not always say what it means....or it doesn't mean what you think it means...lol

just try the various logical pathways of choices on those save options until you actually get a file with the .DOC extension saved.

Thank you for your suggestions, but I still have my problems.
In the meantime, I uninstalled "Open Office" and installed "MS Word Starter 2010".
Have converted all the files to "Rich Text Format  .rtf"
Now they open in my Nexus.   Here's my next problem: I wanted them in Kingsoft Office, so that I could edit if necessary.  In ES File Explorer they show up there but when I open Kingsoft Office, they are not there. So, I made a new folder for them to just open them in ES File Explorer which works great. It shows as SD Card/ Recipes.  But....when I open any of those files, the only way I can close them is to just go back to my desktop.
Have you got any ideas as to what I'm doing wrong?
Again, thanks in advance for any help.

Just a little update.
The files now close the way they are supposed to.  I guess the soft reset helped. I have transferred the files into a separate folder.
All is working well now, except that I have placed them also into Kingsoft Office for later editing if necessary.
However, when I try to open them in Kingsoft Office, they don't open because they have the .rtf extension. "File format not supported.....
The files show the date and size but I can't find a way to change the file extension to  .doc  or  .docx
Thank you in advance for any suggestions you might have.

you can use a converter app either on your desktop or android - here are some examples I did a quick lookup for:

nexus 7 app     https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=br.com.thinkti.android.rtftoword&feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwyLDEsImJyLmNvbS50aGlua3RpLmFuZHJvaWQucnRmdG93b3JkIl0. (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=br.com.thinkti.android.rtftoword&feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwyLDEsImJyLmNvbS50aGlua3RpLmFuZHJvaWQucnRmdG93b3JkIl0.)

win app   http://download.cnet.com/Office-Convert-Pdf-to-Doc-Text-Rtf-Free/3000-10743_4-10902670.html (http://download.cnet.com/Office-Convert-Pdf-to-Doc-Text-Rtf-Free/3000-10743_4-10902670.html)

there are lots of others, and likely better ones but that should get you started.

anken, you can now get kingsoftoffice for your desktop (as part of Foxit Office Suite)  if you would like using the same app on both - no conversion of files needed when you go back n forth.

Thank you!  I have converted the files to .pdf with Adobe Reader X  on my desktop and then transferred them to Kingsoft Office on N7 via USB.
Now I can open and read them on my N7.  Having another problem....I still can't edit the files...
When opening  Kingsoft  and going to "All Documents" they are there.  The path is: /storage/emulated/0/KingsoftOffice/file
This is probably the wrong path for editing but I don't know to place them into a different spot for editing.
Never thought that I would have so much trouble with files...Was completely lost and appreciate the help I have gotten very much. Thank you!!

I always thought that PDF files in general were static, uneditable, graphic representations of text on a page like a photo and as such, I never used that format for editing.  Yes. I know that some commenting and annotating has generally been possible on PDF files.  At any rate, the first thing I ever did with a PDF was to convert the text within into some different format, either one for an eReader (like.prc) because PDF formats were a pain in the ass to read on an eReader, DOC if I wanted to edit and send along to someone else, or txt if I was having trouble getting anything at all out of the original.  Some PDF files ARE actual pictures so you can not convert them at all in fact.  But there is a bewildering array of material within any particular PDF source file - like a box of chocolates.

At any rate, I suggest you install kingsoft on your desktop if you can and work out how to save in the various formats and then transfer to the N7 after that is all working well.  As far as I can tell, Kingsoft has a decent file subsystem so that you should be able to save and load documents from any folder.  I tend to put mine (by usb wired Win Explorer transfer) into \Downloads or \Books or whatever default folder kingsoft creates.

Thank you for your tip, Bigtroutz!!
Installing Kingsoft Office on my laptop did it!! I can now open the files on the desktop, save them as  .wps, then transfer them to my Nexus.
Now I can open and edit all of the files.  Kingsoft is a very nice program on the laptop also.
Thank you!!!!!
