Title: Read a Kindle Book
Post by: WilliamP on January 16, 2013, 10:39:15 AM
How can I get the Nexus 7 to read the book to me?

I believe you are referring to an audiobook in which case I use PowerAmp. There are several audiobook apps available at the store as well. I don't think the Kindle app has a voice setting or a way to computer generate text into voice.

If you are asking for the Kindle app on Android to convert book text to speech, I think you are out of luck as far as I know.

On the other hand, if you are willing to install other eReader apps available on Andoid, you have it made !

CoolReader, Mantano, FBreader, and MoonReader all support tts (text to speech)

of those, the most likely to read Kindle default formats would be dependent on which of the kindle formats you had in mind but probably one of those will work.

TTS for PDF is probably not going to work out well tho, so you might want to convert those to another ereader format.

let me know if you want more info....

If the books downloaded to the Kindle app, it is likely to be kindle format with an extension mobi or azw/ You can use Kindle apps to read it

nothing is easy is it ?  lol

depends on how you downloaded them.  If you DL using the kindle app itself, it generally places them in a weird place like

/sdcard/Android/data/com.amazon.kindle /files/

and splits the file into components like cover, text, etc with godawful names like B003ODIZ blah blah blah so you cant even use search to find the Title or Author.

hopeless (and incredibly stupid by Amazon - what jerks trying to force you to only use the Kindle app!)

the best solution is to download from Amazon directly to your desktop or lappy (where it uses the usual Title and author) and then transfer the file(s) to the N7 \Books folder and subfolderss just as a general practice.  I use the cable to transfer to the N7 but you can use a network share and wifi, or an APP like Airdroid as well or you can register your Nexus 7 with Amazon and direclly download into the N7 somehow (I think, not certain since I don't bother) .  Your choice.

In any case, I always put my books on the N7 \Books  and subfolders therein manually using the cable and WinExplorer and make the subfolders with X-plore or ES file manager.  Airdroid is a worthy app too.

Once you get the method down, it all seems simple but until then, baffling.  You can do it !

EDIT:
yeah, you will need to check the book formats. Fersure before you pick a eReader.  Nothing is easy.

Kindle uses azw, mobi, prc, pdf, txt, others that you wont see much, so check Coolreader - I know it will read prc, mobi pdf txt but i dunno about azw.
You can use a freeware desktop app like Hamster or Calibre to convert between formats.
let me know if you need more info....

I noticed this with the last update. Go to the Google play store and look up Google Play Books. Read under the the "what's new" section.

I want to thank everyone for the help. I have determined that books downloaded from Google Play will read aloud without jumping through hoops. So that is the plan. Again thank you.

The books are downloaded to the Kindle App. on my Nexus 7. How can I tell what the format is?

Common ebook formats:

AZW - Amazon
EPUB - An open format defined by the Open eBook Forum
KF8 - Amazon Kindle Fire
LIT - Microsoft Reader
MOBI - MobiPocket
PDB - Palm
PDF - Portable Document Format
PRC - Palm
RTF - Rich Text Format
TPZ - Amazon Kindle Topaz file
TXT - Plain Text file

There are many other formats.  It seems that each company that manufactures a reader thinks they need a proprietary format.  There are many programs to convert files.

There is a setting to enable more realistic tone inflection but it requires a data connection. I'll look it up and get back to you...

Like Loocid said There is a checkbox in settings for a more realistic inflection with an  connection.
Change speed in Settings /Language and Input/Speech /Text to Speech Output rate

That worked fine. The only problem is I told my wife. So she wanted it faster. I set it back where it was. Thank you anyway.
