Title: New owner, couple nitpicks about the Jellybean
Post by: levolent on January 30, 2013, 10:48:34 PM

It keeps putting an icon on the top bar, and when I drag it down it says "select keyboard layout". Well no matter how many times I tell it English and select the layout it still stays there. Tried a few google terms but didn't see anyone with this issue...

Also, is there a way to close programs by default? When I hit the multitask (furthest right) button, I get a list of active processes basically its the multitasking manager or so it seems. Then I hit "force stop" and it appears to work, but they don't disappear from the list and seem to continually run in the background. If I WANT to multitask I can use the home button or multitask button to open new programs, but want to keep the BACK button as force stop/close that actually works.

Welcome
If you Flick those apps they will disappear from the list. Android manages it's ram very well. In my opinion there is no need to force close apps unless you are having issues. I get that little keyboard icon popup as well. I think it just is there to show the kb is being used.

The icon your taking about is the keyboard or IME switcher, it's suppose to be there to easily change your input method...

The list of apps isn't a multitask menu it's recently used apps, very helpful if your multitasking but for the most part only if you've hit the home button will those apps remain active. Use the back button to close an app or if you close with the home button swipe the tile in the recent apps list.

It finally went away but there are two others now that won't go away. I can't figure out how to dismiss these without disabling notifications for the apps entirely which I don't want to do. I read online that swiping to the left or right should dismiss them, but all this does is spring it to the side a bit then pop right back.

Disable the Korean keyboard. I haven't had any of these issues.

Korean kb was unchecked by default for me. I don't see what this has to do with my notifications that won't go away

It should help. It keeps asking you what language right? The Korean keyboard will be eliminating one of those options so hopefully it will stop asking.

Skype and Utorrent. The Skype one I can kinda understand because you could use this to open up a chat on skype. (of course you could also just hit the shortcut on your homescreen like all the other apps). Torrent app on the otherhand you usually just want to run in the background and no need to take up space in the notify section. I found online that you are supposed to be able to swipe to left and right to get rid of these, but that just partially slides it then it springs right back.

Just sign out of Skype unless you really need it to always be open. As far as UTorrent goes I'm not familiar with it

These are not solutions. I need skype to stay open in case someone wants to contact me. What I need is a way to use the side swipe and have it actually work.

Swipe to remove notifications does work on removable notifications, the Skype notification is there to notify you that Skype is running. Don't blame the device or OS for this, blame the developer and even then they'd probably tell you it needs to be that way because applications that remain active and should not be interrupted regularly have a constant notification.

As for UTorrents, as with Sarge I am unfamiliar with it but if there is a notification there is a reason like the app running in the background and the app and OS notifying you of this.

Well there are dozens of applications running in the background. Not sure why some feel the need to take up space in the notification area ALWAYS. There must be a solution to this.

From my experience, if a torrent app is running it will be in notifications. Shut the App down and it should disappear.

Ok not solved apparently. After installing Swiftkey 3 trial and using my blutooth keyboard I still get a bunch of different keyboard notifications. I don't know why but these are very annoying to me so if someone could help me get rid of them I would be grateful! If I need to change my keyboard input I can go to settings or heck this kb app I think even puts a button for that on the keyboard, so these notification spams are TOTALLY unecessary. If I don't want to use the blutooth kb I can just turn off blutooth or hit the off switch on the kb itself. I want the notification area 100% clean except for important, action required now type stuff!

You can also go to the app drawer, find the app, long press on the app, and drag it to app info.  From there it'll take you to a screen where you can disable notifications for the app.  That app will not have a notification icon anymore. (might be useful for skype or utorrent)

That is if I understand your problem correctly.

Screenshots might help.

You will always have a keyboard notification up when you use the keyboard. I think you can do the same thing as above, though I haven't tried it. Go to Settings - Apps - All - Android Keyboard and click on it - Turn off Notifications... maybe that will work. Looks like if you go to Input Devices, it's disabled and you can't turn that off... sorry. Maybe if you root you can change that?

Or if you want it to be super clean, you can download Nova Launcher and get rid of the notification bar entirely  :P

If I use Nova Launcher, will it still popup notifications when I receive an email or instant message via Steam / Skype?

I read thru your thread at AC.. I am quite anal when it comes to file management and such but I am really having a hard time understanding what you are worked up about. When you open your keyboard to type the  input notification icon appears. When you have an app that is open and or running syncing the background like email, music, radio or download/torrent in most cases will show in notifications. Some apps need to be shutdown like radio and using the notification bar is a shortcut.

I actually want the opposite. More space in the drop down menu. Between Steam chat messages and new emails and the 2 keyboard spams I actually ran out of space already in landscape mode once and I'm just getting started with the device.

Not getting worked up just want to customize my device. This is why I didn't buy anything from Crapple...  customization

Tell me what useful purpose they serve taking up space in the drop down if you think I'm being unreasonable here. The only use I've been found was for Hacker's Keyboard. You can use the notification to force the keyboard up if it disappears on you. Unfortunately SwiftKey 3's split layout in landscape is just too good to pass up and it breaks the ability to force the keyboard up with the HK notification so I just uninstalled HK.

On a side note is there a way to increase autorotate responsiveness? Sometimes takes as long as 3 seconds to reorient and video and sound often skip in the process.

Also Web caching doesn't seem to Work at all. Just switching tabs or hitting the back button forces a full refresh! This is quite an issue if you're out of range of wifi and hit the back button.

Sounds as if you are totally unhappy with your device.

Sounds as though you didnt have anything useful to contribute to the OP so you made a fluff post.

There's nothing inherently wrong other than the speakers only being on 1 side, no vibration motor and no 3g but I can deal with those things. In fact I may be modding the speaker by relocating 1 and adding a 2nd grate. I heard there's a 3g model also so I might transplant that module in while I have it open if that is possible.

I'd also like to customize the simple stuff like what shows in the notification drop down if that is okay with you.

Bonus question: Any way to "accelerate the scrolling/swiping? I turned the only option I saw for this all the way up but it is still quite slow. Bad enough that I may be looking into PageUp/PageDown & Home/End keys for my keyboard if there isn't a way to turn it up beyond "100%"

I don't think there's any need to be like that, it does sound like your unhappy with your device. All devices have their limitations, as you've said yourself you'd have hit an iPads long ago but Android and the Nexus 7 is a great device so enjoy it or don't.

As for the kb notification, it does serve a purpose, its there for quick change of the kb. So if your using the stock kb (or any other) and you want an Emoji you can pull notifications down switch to iWnn IME and have Emoji icons... just because you can't dismiss the notification doesn't mean it's broken or wrong to be there.

As for apps like Skype (although you've solved this) they are there for information, as the guys above have said, its there to inform you the user of the app running.

The reason it's good to customize is what you think is useful may not be useful to me. I actually switch to HK sometimes now just for the ctrl+c & ctrl+v capability (oddly enough the ctrl+z doesn't seem to work) but my goal is to use only 1 great keyboard.

You could try a custom ROM on your N7 like CyanogenMod 10.1, I think you can disable the IME switch icon and have it in the Quick Settings panel but this would mean rooting and chances are your banking app wouldn't work... mine doesn't on a rooted device.

Custom rom is kind of a last resort option imo. There isn't anything compelling enough right now to lose everything I've done and the other risks.

It probably has a way to turn that off if its half decent code. Have at it. It will run always so no.need to know about it.

I've since relaxed a bit about the notification area.  I now have 3 that always run and no useless requests about selecting a kb anymore. (thankyou SwiftKey flow beta!)

People on forums contribute in their own way. Its a fact that things your nit picking about are not on iOS so that's why it sounds like your completely unhappy with your device. Your unhappy with a more capable device.

And the fact that people throw in a joke here and there isn't a bad thing. This forum has a very friendly feel to it and I'm sorry that you don't see the appeal in that. The more contributions you get in a forum the more attention it gets which could lead to the answer of your questions through more conversation.

I just don't think it's funny to tell someone you know the answer they're looking for but won't tell just to lord it over them and bicker about their opinion from an earlier post.

I agree with you about it being a more capable device thats why I bought it. Trouble is it needs an app to add this basic undo function from DROID X & iDevices. Show me the app!  IDC if it has a notification.
