Title: Gmail app question
Post by: martyh on February 15, 2013, 12:06:33 AM
Hi, all -

I've been using the Gmail app since day one on the N7 --

But just today I realized that I can't print an email (I have Epson's iprint app for a wireless printer) -- I couldn't find any print option anywhere in Gmail.

Also, there was no "share" option, either. (Print is usually included in the share list.)

Am I just missing something somewhere in the Gmail app?

Thanks for any responses.
Cheers,
-martyh

I don't think there is a print option with the gmail app. I believe you need to use a printer app like Print Share.

Or if your printer is wireless you could try this (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=epson.print)...

JayJ,

I have the Epson iPrint app, but it doesn't work within the gmail app. It's pretty weird: I'm logged into the gmail app, looking at the email I want to print, and when I use iPrint, what comes up on the screen to print is the gmail logon screen, and not the open email I'm looking at.

I decided to try using gmail through the Chrome browser (instead of the gmail app) -- and it worked -- I was able to print the open email -- but it only worked once. The next time I tried it, all I got once again was the gmail logon screen. Very weird. Same thing happened trying to print out a MS hotmail/outlook email through the Chrome browser: all I got in the print window was the mail logon screen.

I don't need to print emails that often, so I'm not about to invest in the $10 or $15 printer apps, but it sure would be nice to print a page now and then.

Cheers,

I'm not Jayj but I use printer share and it has a Gmail option built into the app.

It's actually quite odd that Google Cloud Print doesn't work with the Gmail app.  The way I've been able to print emails is to import gmail into K9 Mail and set up my printer through cloud print on my desktop. When you go to the option to share the email while in K9, you can select the cloud print app which sends the print request to your printer. Kind of tedious, but it gets the job done. Still doesn't make sense why it's not supported in gmail.

loociddreemr -

In the gmail app there is no share option at all, no ability to share the email with a print app; and, there is no print option either.

I am aware that this functionality is not present in gmail. Im still confused as to why. Like I mentioned, K9 Mail is one of the apps that Google recommends top use with the cloud print app.

I still like you, bjs229 -- honest!

You mention "printer share" but I was unable to find an app by that actual name. Are you referring to "PrinterShare" by Mobile Dynamix?  Just wanted to be sure we're talking about the same app.

Like I said, I'm trying to avoid the $12.95 cost....

But speaking of being unable to print from Gmail, I tried to print a page from within my Amazon account using both Google Cloud Print and the Epson iPrint app. Both had the same results: the actual Amazon page did *not* print; what did print was the Amazon login page. Very weird indeed.

bjs229 --

I was hoping you would help me out with a PrinterShare test:

I assume you have an Amazon account: Can you login to your Amazon acct and, using PrinterShare on your N7,  try to print an invoice from a previous order? You don't actually have to print it, just see if the invoice comes up on the print-ready screen.

When I'm in my Amazon acct, using the Epson iPrint app, and I try to print an invoice -- even though I'm logged in under my own acct, the screen that comes up for printing is the Amazon login screen. It seems that iPrint won't print a secure page, even though the acct is logged in.

Thanks; appreciate your help with this -- as your time permits.
Cheers,

The free version allows you a test page. If it works you should be in good shape. The app isn't cheap but it is one of the only printing options I have found. Printing off the Nexus comes at some what a premium right now. Money wise or tech wise. I went with a little of both.
