Title: how do I load my camera photos onto my Nexus ?
Post by: greybeard on February 17, 2013, 07:42:50 PM
I've loaded my pics from my camera into the Nexus Media Importer from my SD card.
They appear in the Importer, but not in my Picasa or Quickpic program.  How do I get them there so I can send them e-mail with my Nexus?  Maybe I'm going about it the wrong way.
 I'm lost again. -  -

You need to identify the location of your photos on your N7 using a file manager like ES File Explorer (use its search function).  Then you can email them.

Thanks for the fast response   Bird.   I loaded ES file explorer, see a lot of files, but what do I put in the "file name area" to find my files ?? ?..  There are many files listed, but not "Nexus Media Importer" where the photos currently seem to be ??
where the photos currently seem to be. ??

Make your search category "All Image Files," and search your entire sdcard. You are looking for specific photo file names, not your app's name.

I'm not the lowest of the low, but I am the slowest of the slow (49.6 mpg over 38k miles in  Scion xB)

Thanks' but It's not the catagory of "all image files" that I need, It's what do I put in the top line of
"file name" area to find my pic files that I'm trying to figure out.  ?  ?    (I'm old but I'm trying). Thanks again Bird for your help.

You don't need to enter anything  in the file name area.  Do the search as directed for all image files.  When the results come back, they'll show the directory paths where the photos are filed.

If you select the search function in Es File Explorer, leave the file name blank. Select the ellipsis (...) as your path and then press OK. The search will return many results. Scroll through until you find one of the images that you transfered. Long press until a menu pops up. Select "properties.” This will display the path that you will need to follow to locate the rest of the images.

Just as a note, I believe the default import folder is sdcard/downloads

Did you actually copy the files to your N7 using Nexus Media Importer or did you just see that they show up there?  Your email program won't be able to see the pictures on the SD card, only the Nexus Media Importer can see them.  You need to actually copy the pics from the SD card to  the N7's internal storage before the email program or ES File Explorer will be able to find them.  Ypu do this by selecting the pics you wish to copy to the N7 and clicking on the Save icon.

Thanks for the suggestions.  And Strolin, yes I did transfer the photos to the NMImporter.  I see them.
I'll try the suggestions and get back.   Thanks all

I still don't think you understood what I said, forgive me if I misunderstand you.  The fact that NMI lets you see the pictures on the SD card does NOT mean they are imported to the N7.  In order to get your pictures on to the N7 you must do an explicit save of the pictures to a folder on your N7.  Until you actually have the pictures on the N7, your email program will not be able to access them.

I thought Nexus media Importer is read only. Get a file manager like Es file explorer or Astro plug into the computer usb style and move them to your dcim folder. Play with them while disconnected with the file explorer or with your gallery.

NMI is read-only in that you can not use it to write to the external flash memory.  It works fine when you READ the file and WRITE the file to internal storage.

In addition, NMI does absolutely NOTHING that would allow other apps to independently 'see' the files on the external device, it merely provides access to whatever compatible files it "pipes" to the selected destination app.  Piping is when one program sends a file-data stream to be used by another program - and this is what NMI does.

. I thought the op was trying to change file names and such.. I still think a file explorer would make life a lot easier to run the ball.

Yes, the OP will be able to do those things with a File Explorer but not until he gets the photos PHYSICALLY on the N7.  That's what Bigtroutz and I are trying to get across.

+1  --- yep, that was my point, ty

NMI is a strange animal compared to how one might think about a file storage access program.  But it is not the program's fault but rather the result of internal limitations purposely put in place by google when it modified Android to suit it's purposes.  One of the advantages of rooting your N7 is that people can put Linux type default low level I/O device drivers back in place like stickmount does.  One of the annoyances is that Google removed them in the first place.

But even with stickmount in place, Android still suffers from crippled file system I/O, imo, compared to better Linux or Windows routines.  Good BIOS integration  has always been an achilles' heel of professional grade OS development and Android will always lack until this issue is resolved.

Every time I see the tittle if this thread I want to make a comment but it actually has nothing to do with OP but it may help somebody in suggesting have a smartphone with NFC and a nice camera. Its the coolest thing since sliced bread to transfer pictures.

heh, yeh, I have been wanting to try NFC out but my N7 is the only NFC enabled device in this household.  I understand that data transfer is actually performed by the BT connection and the NFC itself is only used for the handshaking and connection management.  But that's second-hand info so ...

That's spot on. Its a really nice and fast feature. Can't wait for all the new smart cameras to have NFC
