Title: Location Services/GPS Receivers

Could someone explain the distinction between Location Services and the GPS Receiver? I know there is no such thing as privacy these days, but what are the advantages/disadvantages of turning them on vs. off?

Google apps will request your location through multiple channels.  GPS is usually accurate enough.  More information can be provided through enabling wifi as well as the gps.  Location services combines these to determine the most accurate information.  GPS can be adequate for most apps. But some google services require location services to be anabled in order for function properly.

Location services use your mobile data (cell tower you are connected to) or your wifi.

You know all those Google streetview cars? They also index every wife hotspot and wireless router it comes across.  So it looks what your wifi sees and knows where you are.

Well, you are broadcasting to the world...unless you shield your house, your WiFi router's hardware address is as public as the address on your mailbox or front door.  I am not sure if it's been legally challenged, but I don't think there is any expectation of privacy.

If you turn on both location services and gps, then the gps coordinates could be used to update the location services database for your wife's wifi 802.11g-spot.

But, to expand on your statement, I do agree as mobile communication and social networking expand, privacy becomes a serious concern.

I don't know about anyone else but I wouldn't want the location of my wife's g-spot available in a database somewhere.  ;D
