Title: Private syncing
Post by: nexusNovice on March 02, 2013, 11:34:54 AM
If one is reluctant to share data with Google or the cloud, is there an easy way to sync my Nexus 7 data with my windows phone via either wlan wifi, usb cable, or my own website?

Even if it is done per application (Astrid, contacts/people, etc.)?

Thanks

Not that I'm aware of.  You might be able to export a contacts file and import it from within the outlook app, but that might be the extent.  Not exactly a sync, but just copying data one time.

I used to be that paranoid. Now, I can even walk outside without worrying people are looking at me. Just kidding. So what do you risk by google storing contacts? Do you know any terrorists? I haven't seen any spam caused by this. And NSA Echelon probably isn't all that interested.

I've done that to load my new nexus but it is tedious.....

What happens when you send an email or text? Isn't that considered sharing if someone BIGGER than you wants the info at some point?
I am personally more afraid of someone actually physically stealing or finding my devices than a cyber heist.

It just rubs me wrong. Using the cloud for storage should not have to mean that they can read my stuff. I don't have a problem with the NSA reading my stuff but why should commercial entities be allowed to do that and use the data for profit? Often without even asking permission. They certainly would not allow me to read their private documents and address books.

Just my 2 cents.

Who exactly is allowed to read your stuff without a warrant or permission?

I don't think account data is shared. If you go to your isp's web mail, you can sync your contacts there by exporting them as business card format from outlook or Windows Live then importing into the web contacts. The contacts can be imported into the gmail web site the same way. The advantage is that you can access and sync these contacts to your tablet easily. If this data were being shared or sold to advertisers I would be surprised and extremely angry. Bad google, bad dog. You may find a way to sync to the isp web mail, if that is more palatable.

Check the privacy disclaimers on the gmail web site.
