I have an ASUS Nexus 7 32GB + 3G with Android 4.2.2. I want to connect using the USB cable to my PC running Windows XP Home SP3 operating system.
I have spent days searching and trying many different methods to get my Nexus 7 to appear on my PC's "My Computer" windows. So far, with no success. Others have been able to do this, so I am obviously doing something wrong.
So to start with a clean sheet, I have uninstalled from my PC; Microsoft's MTP Porting Kit, Google's Android ADB Interface driver, and Microsoft's Windows Media Player 11.
Starting with my "clean sheet" what must I do to USB connect my Nexus 7 to my Windows XP PC so that the Nexus 7 appears in the "My Computer" window so that I explore and transfer files?

Getting the right drivers installed can be one of the biggest challenges. Open your device manager and see what the system is listing your nexus as. It may be helpful to download the Wugfresh toolkit and allow that to do it for you.

I and many others had the same problems like you
I try MTP, PTP, uninstall, re-insall drivers, using the latest Wug Toolkit 1.6.3 as well as skip-soft tool kit and I still can not get the PC to recognize my N7.
The PC installs ADB driver fine but fails to install the MTP Device (N7) every time
I try a dozen times but no luck
Read a few dozen of messages and it appears that there are no clear solutions to this issue. There are several pages dealing with this issue at XDA but still no solution
Still trying to read more and will post if I find a solution to this

Thank you for your insight Dominic. Luckily, I haven't had any issues.

when i bought my new Nexus7, i learned the beginner's basics and
started loading a whole bunch of new apps... including maybe
two or three 'tools' type apps.
Then i HAD TO put some info into a folder using my WinXP'
Then i did the transfer of that folder to the new Nexus7.
Mine worked fine.... I used the USB cable and no problem.
The only thing is.... I had to wait.... perhaps a full minute or two
for the PC to recognize the Nexus7. It took a while though.
It worked without a hitch. :D

I recently bought a laptop with Win7.
I was hoping that it would reconize my N7 but no go, I install both Wug NRT and skipsoft NRT but again no go.
I am beginning to suspect that there may be some files in the N7 that prevent the PC to recognize the N7
My N7 is rooted and upgraded to 4.2.2
Anyone has any ideas ?
