Title: YouTube problems and solution(?)
Post by: ajm600 on March 22, 2013, 11:55:13 AM
For some time now my otherwise excellent nexus 7 has been having buffering problems in YouTube. I tried everything including removing the cache and other steps recommended. Nothing worked. Until.........

Now when the screen freezes (dreaded circling circle), I hit the menu (three dots) icon on top right, press "settings", then "return". At this point the circle has been replaced by the arrow and the video starts up where it left off when it is pressed. It can happen more than 5 times in one 40 minute video (I do love aircrash investigations!)

Why there is a problem in the first place, I have yet to discover - equally, I don't know why my solution works - it just does.

Can anyone enlighten me on these two conundrums?

Does anyone else suffer?

A solution offered by ASUS is to approach YouTube through the browser because the (uninstallable) app may be corrupted, but this spoils YouTube surfing.

Someone suggested using pvstar+ instead of the utube app. It's worked for me!

I use PVstar + as well. I thought I was the only Greg Feith fan here. Lol.

If you're competent with Android & have a rooted device, you could try adding the following lines to /system/build.prop.  Make a backup of the original file, and don't complain to me if it doesn't work, or you brick your device.

Add these after the # end build properties and before the ## ADDITIONAL_BUILD_PROPERTIES sections:

# My tweaks for Netflix and Youtube buffer issues
# To turn these off just put a pound symbol in front like this line.
# A pound symbol means a comment line so you know.
media.stagefright.enable-player=true
media.stagefright.enable-meta=true
media.stagefright.enable-scan=false
media.stagefright.enable-http=true

# My Tweaks for performance
# To turn these off and turn on defaults comment out the next 3 lines and remove the pound symbol from the last 2.
ro.kernel.android.checkjni=0
ro.kernel.checkjni=0
wifi.supplicant_scan_interval=100
#wifi.supplicant_scan_interval=15
#ro.kernel.android.checkjni=1

Thanks all. pvstar+ has worked perfectly so far   :D :D
I would still like to know why my N7 doesn't like YouTube, because the surfing options are better.
My device is not rooted, and I don't want to start fiddling with it - but I don't really see why I should have to!

I have had problems with Youtube since my first Nexus 7. Not sure exactly what the reason for the issue is but it happens with the app and the browser for me at times. I use Youtube when I can but switch to PVstar when it starts to act up. It has something to do with the HD stream. If I toggle from hd to normal the stuttering stops.
