Title: Messed up my rooted nexus 7
Post by: engineer on March 23, 2013, 10:59:26 AM
Hi guys,
I need help.

I have a rooted nexus 7, rooted using the excellent wug toolkit. Working fine till I did something I should not have.

I installed LBE Privacy Guard on the nexus 7 even though it said it was not compatible. Essentially I transferred the apk and installed it that way. The install froze the nexus when I opened the app. Rebooting did the same. As it rebooted it would freeze with a blank screen.

I deleted the apk and used the reboot into safe mode where I pressed the power button and a volume button and got the nexus to boot properly. I "think" I also managed to uninstall LBE.

Now all is well except that I can no longer resize widgets on my screens. When I try to resize the resize area turns red and when I click elsewhere the resize did not take.

Obviously I messed something up but don't know what. I am using ADWLauncher EX. Cannot find the original launcher to go back to it.

I'm from the windows world and don't know my way around android. Please advise.

I thought to add that when I rebooted and selected recovery mode I got the android robot with the open flap door and an X on it.

Does that mean something is wrong with the bootloader?

if I remember correctly you will need to reinstall recovery TWRP or CWM which can be done from the Wug Toolkit or ROM Manager.

I was afraid that might be the case. Would that mean losing my settings and data?

You wont lose anything. Just flash a new recovery.
To get to the stock launcher find your launcher in apps settings and clear the default.

I agree with bjs229, just flash a new recovery. You can always flash a new recovery without losing anything, in fact if you want to change from one recovery to another, just flash the different recovery over the old one.

Good to know. I tried something simpler first and it worked.

Here is what I did, in case it helps someone else.

Assuming that the problem had to do with the launcher settings being corrupted (because everything else was fine), I went to Settings / apps and deleted the "data" for adw launcher, restoring it to default.

Checked that widgets resizing problem was gone - it was.

Then used adw built in backup / Restore to restore its saved settings.

It worked! Everything is back and everything works correctly.

(for newcomers to android like me, this was less stressful than re flashing)

Thanks for the help guys. You're great.

Glad you fixed your Launcher issue, but remember until you flash a new recovery, you will not be able to make a Nandroid backup or access recovery mode.

Please explain. What do you mean by flash a new recovery? What do you mean I should do and how do I do it?

Thank you.
