Title: OTG Cords

I've barely begun to scratch the surface when it comes to understanding my Nexus 7.  Have a feeling I should be able to figure this out but so far I haven't.
I've heard several references to the need for an OTG cable since the 7 doesn't have a USB port.
Since my charger cord has a USB connector on one end and micro on the other, why can't I just pull the plug from the charger module and use it to connect my 7 to my laptop?

The usb cable that comes with the charger is a male mini on one end and a male usb on the other. You need a female usb for the flash drive to plug into. I got mine at micro center but amazon also sells them.

OTG just means "on the go".

You're talking 2 different things.  First of all, you can unplug the USB cable from the charger module and plug it into your laptop to transfer files to/from your Nexus 7.  The Nexus 7 should show up as an additional drive in Windows Explorer.

The OTG cable is to allow you to plug in certain USB peripherals such as a USB thumb drive, mouse or keyboard.   The OTG cable is more than just a cable with a female USB socket on one end, there is a slight difference in the wiring (2 pins connected together) that allow it to work.  For the Nexus 7 to be able to read/write from/to a USB thumb drive or SD card you also need an app such as the Nexus Media Importer as well as the OTG cable.

Remember with an OTG cable, Media Importer will only read from the USB device. If you want to write to the USB device by OTG, you will have to have root and use the app, Stickmount.

Not anymore, from 5.0 Media Importer allows writing to usb FAT without root.
