So what happened to the prospect of working with a user-provided micro-SD card ???
Rumor mill was pretty certain about this, complete with photos of its location.

Don't know where you read that and it was never going to happen...

Thought I read this somewhere, but perhaps I was confusing this with SIM-card slot.
Too bad!

FWIW, it's possible to plug an SD card into a multifunction card reader connected to the OTG port of a rooted Nexus 7.
I'm not the lowest of the low, but I am the slowest of the slow (49.3 mpg over 45k miles in Scion xB)

Nexus devices NEVER have MicroSD or SD Card slots...wherever you read that they were pulling your leg.

No micro slot here ..

But - it is still possible to use an sdcard even with the older nexus 7. Here's how. Using Stickmount, the proper cable and an inexpensive card reader.
Stickmount is designed to read a flash stick drive, but it will read a sdcard just as well in a card reader. I do it all the time. Not as convenient as a built in slot, but with a short 8 inch cable almost as good. :-)
