Title: Nexus 7 v2 versus Acer Chromebook C710...
Post by: DFWallace on August 10, 2013, 12:28:08 PM

I have a gaming computer, but not a smartphone, tablet, nor laptop. (gave laptop to our niece several yrs ago) I have a Kindle 'Keyboard'. The wife has a Samsung S3 phone. When we go out for the day, doing whatever, I wouldn't mind having a device to connect to the web. I think my budget would be @ $350, as I will soon be buying an expensive video card (nVidia GTX780) for my gaming computer.

Under consideration is the new Nexus 7 and the Acer or Samsung Chromebook @ $260-$350. I like the notion of being able to create content on the new device, but it's not critical.

What do you folks think?

Gaming computer will do all the PC type we work you need. Chrome book is just another watered down laptop..I would go for the Nexus.

Have to agree with bjs here, I think you'd enjoy a Nexus 7.

I agree with Barry and Jason.  I'm retired, too, and prefer the portability of a 7" tablet over that of a notebook/laptop.

I will have to agree with all of the above.

Another retired guy here...

The new Nexus 7 is an AMAZING and FUN device!  Although I have a laptop, I seldom use it anymore now that I have my trusty N7.  Two different operating systems though; not all games that play on a PC will play on Android.  For my money, Nexus 7 is the biggest bang for the buck!

Ok, thanks, and a few more questions...

Considering my OP, would I need the LTE version of the new Nexus 7?

I probably would not try to jury-rig it with apps (Foxfi, or BT from wife's SGS3 paired to the N7 ) to use as a phone, as I have an old 'dumbphone' I still use once in a while.

You certainly wouldn't need LTE capability for gaming and reading.  If you have Internet where you'll be with your wife, then you can do your web browsing and make phone calls with Groove IP Lite.  I find enough free Internet access at fast food restaurants, shopping centers, airports, coffee shops, etc. that I won't buy an LTE device.
