Title: Ok, got my Nexus 7 2013..... a few questions
Post by: Scott99 on August 14, 2013, 12:54:54 PM
Ok, I got my new Nexus 7 2013 version. And as I was with my 2012 Nexus 7, I'm blown away by it, amazing tablet. The sound quality both on the tablet as well as through headphones are 1000x better. Also, watching movies and playing games on thie thing is amazing. Bought Crazy Taxi, and it brought tears to my eyes because of how good it looked.

My only slight complaint/question about the thing is, now that it doesn't have NVidia's Tegra 3 chip in it anymore, I can't use certain apps any more (Tegra zone, etc). Also, I noticed that certain effects weren't on in certain games anymore, like in Dead Trigger, it seems like the water effects and steam effects are missing. I feel like I'm playing on my old iPhone 4 which didn't have those effects (on my iPhone 5, the effects are there)

Yet the water on the camera effect of Riptide is still there.

My question is, why didn't they just put the Tegra 4 chip in there ? Kind of confusing and irritating.

Hopefully, those apps will be updated with opengl 3.0 support, should be better than tegra3. Be patient, a few teething problems.

Thanks Matt for the answer. Please consider, I'm pretty much an Android newbie, never did anything with my first Nexus 7 (never rooted it), so I don't know much about these things. What exactly is opengl 3.0 ? Would I have to do anything special ? Or is this part of an Android update ? Thanks for any info.

I'm not an expert, so here's a link.lol

The newer tegra 4 should have even better graphics but it wasn't logistically ready for this nexus release.

So as soon as the coders catch up to this technology there will be something new for them to work on and new devices for us. At least these upgrade cycles aren't the planned obsolescence that the mypad company employs. Our tablets should always have functionality without all the apps in Google play losing support for older android versions. Rant over.

Read the article, and it only confused me more. Not sure how opengl 3.0 can "turn on" the effects that were lost on a game like Dead Trigger when moving from a Tegra 3 Chip to a Snapdragon Chip.

Some games were optimized for tegra 3. Some will be optimized for adreno. Email the developers of the games you want fixed, they are usually helpful.
