Title: Bricked Nexus 7
Post by: sui_page on August 28, 2013, 01:41:09 AM
I was notified up an Android 4.3 update  this morning so I decide to go ahead and install. So during reboot only the 'X' loading screen would show and it wouldn't progress from there. I waited like 1/2 hour before I decided to turn it off. I was able to turn on another time but again it wouldn't progress. Now it won't even turn on. I've tried entering recovery mode and plugging it into my laptop to charge but it isn't responding at all. Anyone having a similar issue after the new update?

First make sure you change it with the factory power supply. Next try downloading the WugFresh Toolkit to your laptop and use the recovery feature, I think it is titled, soft brick.

I'd rather not do this if it involves rooting my Nexus as I don't want to void my warranty. Any other options?

Finally got it charging again by doing the following steps taken from this post http://forums.androidcentral.com/google-nexus-7-tablet-2013/302269-wont-turn-wont-charge-solved.html (http://forums.androidcentral.com/google-nexus-7-tablet-2013/302269-wont-turn-wont-charge-solved.html)

What he did was:
1. Plug in
2. Press power and volume up until you see the battery icon
3. Let go and charge for 5 or so minutes
4. Press power like you would to turn it on normally

However at this point it would still be stuck on the 'X' screen so I've had to do a factory reset by following this video Nexus 7 stuck on x screen? This is how to get Nexus 7 2nd generation off of frozen x screen (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jBKVAfZUFqI#)This is ridiculous as now I have to re-install and setup everything like I had before. It's such a pain and I shouldn't have to deal with this for a new product. Aren't updates supposed to fix bugs not create them. Sorry for ranting I'm just really annoyed atm

The fix in WugFresh uses adb and fastboot commands and do not require permanent root as well as retaining your apps and data. BTW, there is always the chance that an OTA will fail and as you found the final solution after exhausting other options is a factory reset. My elected safeguard is rooting and a nandroid backup. Glad you got it working anyway.

Cool! You figured it out. Recovering from a factory reset can be pretty annoying and time consuming. Especially when  stock.
