Title: Can only use bluetooth audio with Google Play Music
Post by: leftygt on September 08, 2013, 10:00:31 AM
Hi

I am using my Nexus 7 in my car for streaming music via bluetooth to my Alpine head unit. This works just fine with Google Play Music, but I dont like the interface. I have 2 other music players installed - Poweramp and Zimly - which I much prefer to use, only problem is if there is no music playing on either of these players when I switch to blutooth audio on my head unit, I get no sound and "Bluetooth Audio paused" displaying on the Alpine unit. Same thing happens if I have a song playing when I select bluetooth audio - music will play fine and the head unit picks it up no problem, but if I pause it for more than 3 seconds I just get the same message "Bluetooth Audio paused" and it will play no more until I actuall scroll through the inputs to bluetooth audio again. I initially thought it was a problem with the stereo, but Google Play music works fine with absolutely no problems, and my Galaxy S3 also works fine. It's as if Google Play Music is blocking any other apps from fully functioning?

I think you opened two threads on this same subject. As far as I know, the only app that works for media stored on the Google cloud is GOogle Play Music.

My bad, sorry - I'll delete one straight away. It's not for cloud music - its stored on the internal drive. I was on to alpine and they said because the head unit isn't an "app" head unit, it will only work right with the default player of the operating system...is there a way to change the default player?

I think if you speak into Google now and say play such and such an artist you have the option to designate a player. Not sure if that will help in your situation though.

Dont think it will help - its more of a control issue, the head unit will only work 100% with the default player - unless I can change that I'm stuck with Google Play Music :'(

Go to settings/apps Google play music and clear the launch by default button, navigate to an mp3 with a file explorer and tap on it. You should be able to choose another installed player to open by default. Always or just once menu.

Matt...that option seems to be disabled, I can see the button but it's "greyed-out"?

Then Google play music is not the default player. I would suggest trying other players to find one that works or search for a forum on your car's head unit, which you did not specify.

Sorry, alpine but what model? Try opening an mp3 from a file explorer? I use es file explorer, find an mp3, tap it and open it with your preferred player, choosing always. That should make it the default, if that's really the problem.

In researching your issue, it seems to be a problem with later versions of android.

I'd try updating the alpine BT firmware, and keep after them until they admit their culpability and address the actual problem.

Since the nexus 7 will always have the newest version of android, including the upcoming kit-kat, everyone else will be scrambling to catch up. You may have to wait for a better firmware to be released. Or use an older device in the car,  ics 4.0 and under should work. Progress is a drag, ain't it?
