Hello all,
I appreciate being able to be a member here and possibly get some help. I hope that I can return this favor someday.
I almost bought my first Nexus 7 yesterday, but it wasn't because I had cold feet! It ended up the guy selling it thought it was a 2013! Really it was the older model. Would have been a great deal if it was the '13! Really if I didn't at least knew a little about the two models, I would have been a not so proud owner of a '12 model! I'm pretty sure that the box he had it in and the model he was selling did not correspond between the two.
So my question is, can help me learn what just about everything the label on box states? How would I know the box and the tablet match?

I can't remember about the label, but the best way to tell the difference in the 2012 and the 2013 is to look for the rear facing camera. If you want to make sure that you have the original box the 2013 box has blue in the box design.

I was aware of the back having dimples on the surface of the 2012 and the 2013 being smooth. That's what saved me really. I'm not quite sure on the camera suggestion. I think you're saying there isn't a rear camera on the 2012 models?

You are correct the 2012 model does not have a rear facing camera, where as the 2013 model does have a rear facing camera. Also looking at the first picture you posted the hint of blue that I can see certainly indicates that it is a 2013 model box. The 2012 model has no blue in the color scheme.

The 2012 box is a dark grey and the 2013 box is blue... But as Prime has said the tabs themselves have clear physical differences like the camera on the back of the 2013 but also the 2012 had a silver edge to the bezel or around the outside edge of the tab.
The silver edge of the bezel can clearly be seen in this picture of my now gone 2012 Nexus 7.

I am clueless on being able to read the labels on this units! There must be some guideline someone wrote up right?

Look at the back. If the Nexus logo is in portrait mode it is a 2012. If it is in landscape mode it is a 2013.

One camera, 1.2 megapixel- n7 2012 still made in 2013 apparently.
