About two weeks ago I started to get pop up ads on the bottom of my screen. They are for stuff I have never seen or looks at. I have run Avast an Malware, but nothing shows up.

Factory reset
-
OK, do I do a backup of system, or will that save the problem? Will all my bookmarks be saved?
-
A factory reset returns your Nexus to the out of the box state. If you are signed into your Google account and are using Chrome as your browser, your bookmarks are saved and are available when you sign back into your Google account on any version of Chrome (you can test it on any computer or tablet that hasChrome installed). Also, any apps purchased through Google Play will be available when you sign back into your Google account after the factory reset.

Thanks for the info. I guess I will take a big breath an give it a try.

Did a factory reset. Updated all my apps. Reinstalled my bookmarks.
Now tablet is very slow and goes to a blank screen for no reason. The only thing showing on blank screen is the stuff that is always along the top. Time, wfi strength etc.
Now what do I need to do to speed it back up?
-
Give your device a few hours to finalize synchronization with Google, allowing a few hours after a factory reset works wonders.

Been 3 days now, still slower and getting blank screen. Wished I didn't do reset, a least tablet was fast and no blank screen before.
-
I would do another factory reset, but not install Google backups. Instead, I would reinstall apps one at a time and see if any of them are causing your problems. Have you installed any apps that weren't from the Google Play Store?
-
Tiny is correct on this one, it becomes trial and error, at this point. Your other option is a full install of your stock ROM, but I feel reluctant to offer any additional suggestions considering your wishes to have not attempted the factory reset. Stability issues with Android usually come down to apps or the OS, but the user has to accept the responsibility of exploring the options.

Everything from google store. I have been getting this popup that says Snap. I have to click it to go back to the page I was on.
-
Snap secure? A popup may be a JavaScript file attached to a web hosting service. The popup blocker in chrome doesn't block these. What site is affected, droid life?
Or it could be a free app doing this. Try https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.denper.addonsdetector
