Sorry... But your question is a little vague.. If you are trying to get rid of the applications on one of your five home screens.. just hold down the application bookmark until  you see the remove bar appear at the top of your screen. Without lifting your finger off of the application icon, slide your finger with the bookmark to the remove bar and release.  That will delete the application shortcut off of that home screen ,but not delete the application.  If you want to MOVE the application to another screen.. Press and hold the application icon... then drag the icon to the edge of the screen. You will see the edge of the screen glow with a small blue bar and then switch to the adjacent Home screen. Release your finger and it will drop the application icon on that home screen.

Follow that procedure  for the remaining icons and that will clear one of your home screens.

If you were trying to make the desktop background black. Open your camera application.. hold your finger or thumb over the camera lens and take a picture. Go back to your desktop .. press and hold  on a blank portion of your screen until you see the " "Choose wallpaper from" window appear. Choose gallery... Choose the "black" picture you just took.  That will turn your desktop background "Black"!

Good Luck!

You completely missed the question, read slower, the question is how do you remove one of the home screens, not how do you remove and icon or app. There is five home screen,he wants to delete one of them, can you answer this question,I can't. Consider this a reset on the valid question. You can easily do this on a phone,by holding down on the menu button ,it will bring up the home screen, where is that function?

I don't believe you can delete one of the 7 home screens in Jelly Bean on the Nexus 7.   If you want less home screens you'll have to use a custom launcher like Nova or Apex.   If you don't want to use a custom launcher then just arrange your icons and apps so that the empty screen is on the end and don't scroll over to it. :)  Probably they'll add the ability of adding/subtracting home screens in a later version of Android.
